Well, the rule of thumb for forced induction engines is a 40% increase in power, and the ratio of 100% to 140% is 0.71, so it's not a coincidence in that sense. More to the point, the naming comes from Shelby himself, so presumably he had this in mind when he named the two versions of his upgraded Mustangs. The two names stuck.

The original GT350 had 306 HP, the 67 Gt500 had 355
