The thought process was the other way around. Because the Ecoboost needs more cooling Ford opened up the grille more to allow more air in, but because of the amount of turbulence caused by opening the grille up more they decided to add in the AGS to decrease that extra drag. Because the GT/50th AP grilles are set in deeper they don't get as much of that turbulence. Instead of opening up the GT grille more they just gave it heat extractors

Interesting. I hadn't noticed the significant difference in depth between the two grilles. You can see how the ecoboost grille is set as forward as possible, while the GT grille is set deep behind the 'fangs'.

I'd argue they both have roughly the same opening size. I wonder how much more cooling is created just from moving the grille forward. And why does a turbo 4cylinder really need that much extra cooling? The eco has a lower compression than the GT. May be the turbo itself gets hotter, but why would engine bay temps in the eco be so much hotter to need increased cooling.

Heat extractors seem like the smarter design, but perhaps the marketing team needed another visible differentiator.

I would still argue that the anecdotes about not seeing any mpg change after removing AGS are not to be trusted.

While the engine itself will do the most for the new Mustang's economy, the aerodynamic tweaks amount to a three percent improvement, for a one percent boost in highway fuel efficiency.
1-3% is definitely within the statistical error of the car's mpg calculator, so no you prob wouldn't see it. Doesn't mean the AGS doesn't do something.

Yea I have the GT grille on my EB now and before that I had the 50th grille so I never had shutters but both have a lot less holes and sit in a good inch and a half deeper. See your pic above compared to the holes in this EB grille. I do think people with the wide open grille deletes probably do get affected more than they think, but just switching to the GT grille is likely negligible

We don't get those extractors in the UK and I don't THINK there are any other differences re. airflow so Ford clearly don't see it as a big issue.
