They inspect the crank and bearings, so if yours are not damaged or out of spec, they change your oil and give you a 10/150,000 engine warranty
They don’t inspect them. Just check for an error code

If your consuming two quarts every 5k miles. you have something else going on besides just using 5w-20. Yes, a little here and there is ok, but 2 quarts means something is not fully right and its not just the oil you are using. I've had 4 S550's and none of them have even consumed 1/4 of a quart during a 5000 mile oil change.
Most manufacturers allow for up to 1qt per 800 miles before deeming it to be an issue

Voodoos are 1 quart per 500 miles 😉

The problem is the bearing supplier, not the oil weight.
Correct, but a thicker oil will cushion the bearings a bit better and extend their life a bit longer than thinner oil.

Interesting that they are trying to bandaid the issue as well with thicker oil for those who don’t have the issue yet.
All they're trying to do is limp these engines to the warranty finishline. If they can save a few thousand engines from having to be replaced then they saved themselves millions of dollars.

Oh I totally understand. Just stating the root cause is poor choice to change suppliers.

Sure, Gm choose the cheapest way to deal with the issue
But if that solution do fix the issue, what’s the problem?
As a matter of fact that show that they are pretty smart
They had a bearing that worked and didn't fail. Then switched suppliers. Then the bearing failed.

It's a band aid.

I was specifically replying to the post regarding the headlamp issue, not the engine

0w40 is actually thicker at both cold and warm temps than 5w30, even though 0w40 has a lower pour point. 0w40 just sheers down faster. Personally I run 0w40 over 5w30. Added bonus to 0w40 is it typically uses a higher quality base oil.

I might switch to 5w50 at some point though.

I'm really wondering how bad the rod bearings would have to be to fail or pass their DTC check (my understanding is it's looking at crank to camshaft orientation shift/relative position).

Seeing all the cam phaser issues and transmission issues in F150's at less than 100k miles, this issue, lifters in GM engines, and Hemi issues is really depressing.

A sticker will not last the life of the car. Especially down south. This will just be a problem down the road again. It’s not a fix.

That’s a fallacy, Stickers can easily last the life of a vehicle. Most graphics, stripes, nameplates, etc, are nothing more than stickers and just go to a junkyard to verify that most of the time they will outlast a vehicle
