The service guy at the Ford dealer just told me they do NOT recommend full synthetic oil until about 15,000 miles. Huh? He said the piston rings would not break in properly with full synthetic oil. This sounds ridiculous to me. Has anyone else heard this? WTF is this guy talking about?

I'm currently running 5-50 full synthetic, switched after break in @ ~1000 miles.
My dealer's service manager gave me his blessings on the change over.

service managers manage the technicians and advisors, they don't necessarily know a lot about cars.....

sure, maybe your guy invented oil, but maybe he is really just saying, "pay me, hurry."

Piston rings take about 1000 miles to break in.
Honestly, Toyota engines come with full synthetic oil from the factory.

How many mile do you put on a synthetic change? Since I'm now having to pay for the change, I might switch over too.

I changed over to Full Synthetic at 2,000 miles. Now at 5600 and the car has never used a drop.

You can go by your indicator or no more then a year. If you do track days, I don't but if I did, I would change the oil/filter before and after. But that's just me. If it's just Normal driving 5-7500/annually or if the indicator says to first (on good quality synthetic). If you go buy the indicator make sure your using oil that meets or exceeds Ford's oil requirements listed in your user manual. I would not use anything less then the factory fill Motorcraft synthetic blend. Oil weight and brand is up to you and your research for what you think is best. Too many different POV's on that for me to comment. Personally for my needs I have only used Motorcraft 5w20 Full Synthetic and FL500s filters on my 13 and plan to do the same on my 15. I don't drive my car like a bitch, but I don't track it either, but I make the sure the oil gets good and hot, and the engine gets put through it's paces every time I do.
