I know a couple of you guys have done this, and been pleased with the results. Everyone that I have seen has been bottom mounted through a speaker ring. Is there any issue (sound loss or rattling) with the speaker size being larger than the 6.5" mounting hole?

I would expect not. I considered the free air method as well but opted against it as I prefer a sealed enclosure. I will be going the speaker ring route or at least a larger woofer that the factory hole. Until I start the project I would know for sure. My intentions are to use two of the JL 8w3v3 in their recommended sealed enclosure and have them attached to the deck bottom. In my primary car I use the 6" version with great results.

Remember that in order for a free-air / infinite baffle setup to work properly, the front and rear sound waves must remain separate from each other... difficult to do in a vehicle with a fold down rear seat.
