The factory intercooler is marginal even for a stock car. If you're tuned, tracking the car or even just live someplace warm, you probably want to swap in either a direct fit (like the cp-e that just arrived at my door) or if you're really pushing it one of the bigger ones like Levels or ATM.
Yeah, ecoboost turbos come with a intercooler but it's not very big and if you are in a hot area of the country and with the pedal to the floor all the time after awhile you are going to get heatsoak and reduced performance.
The solution is to put in a bigger and/or better intercooler, it will get rid of most of the heatsoak.
This is for sure is going to be one of my first "engine" mods being down here in Florida.
I had a turbo buick that wasn't intercooled. The turbo compressor outlet was stuck right down into the back of the intake manifold with a big o ring. Of course, the car was an '84, so they can be forgiven for not having hit all the marks with their turbo technology. It still had sequential port injection, which was pretty advanced 34 years ago.
Different topic maybe - but am I the only one wondering how a Ford Fusion has a 2.7 Lit v6 echoboost and the mustang only a 2.3L turboed 4 banger? Feels like the Mustang got gypped.
