Ford Mustang tops 2021 Made in America Auto Index

The Corvette Stingray placed second, the Tesla Model 3 placed third and the Ford Bronco placed fourth.

This is the second consecutive year a Ford Motor Co. model has topped the Kogod Made in America Auto Index. The Ford Ranger topped the list in 2020 but fell to 16th place this year because its overall amount of U.S. and Canadian content fell from 70 to 45 percent.

The Mustang contains nearly 89 percent domestic content, according to the index. For comparison, the 10th-ranked vehicle contains 76 percent domestic content.

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray placed second, the Tesla Model 3 placed third and the Ford Bronco placed fourth.

Five models tied for fifth place: the Ford Expedition, the gasoline engine-equipped GMC Canyon pickup, the gasoline engine-equipped Chevrolet Colorado pickup, the Tesla Model S and the Tesla Model Y.

Only the gasoline engine-equipped versions of those two General Motors pickups took fifth place. The diesel engine-equipped versions of the Canyon and Colorado rank No. 22 because their engines come from Thailand, according to the index.

The index also measured the total domestic content, or TDC, for manufacturers of vehicles assembled in the U.S. GM and Ford have TDC averages of more than 70 percent. Tesla's TDC average was 81 percent.

Other automakers including Fiat Chrysler (now Stellantis), Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota have TDC averages ranging between 65 and 70 percent. BMW and Volvo had some of the lowest TDC averages — 35 and 30 percent, respectively.

Press Release From the Report:

In the top spot with 88.5 percent domestic content is the manual transmission-equipped Ford Mustang 5.0 liter GT.

The Ford Ranger, which was no. 1 in 2020, dropped to no. 16 due to a reduction in US/Canadian content from 70 percent to 45 percent. In the second spot is the Chevy Corvette Stingray. In the third position is the Tesla Model 3. Ford’s newly-released Bronco comes in at the fourth position. Ford’s Expedition, GM’s gas engine-equipped Canyon and Colorado Pickups, and Tesla’s Model S and Y are fifth. The diesel engine-equipped versions of the Canyon and Colorado come in at no. 22 thanks to a foreign-sourced (Thailand) engine. Jeep places three models of the popular Cherokee at no. 6, while the automatic transmission version of the Chevy Camaro comes in at no. 7 (the manual transmission-equipped Camaro comes in at no. 17 due to a foreign-sourced transmission from Mexico). The Ford F-150 and the Tesla Model X share the no. 8 spot in the ranking. Honda places four cars in the no. 9 spot—the Ridgeline, Odyssey, Pilot, and Passport. Another pickup, the Ram 1500, shares the 10th position with two more Mustangs—the automatic 5.0 liter and the 2.3 liter Ecoboost version. The top-ranked Mustang boasts 88.5 percent domestic content compared to 76 percent for the 10th-ranked cars.

Comparing total domestic content for all vehicles sold in the US by brand, irrespective of the location of assembly, results in the following table, which shows the relationship between total domestic content (TDC) for US-assembled vehicles compared to all vehicles in a manufacturer’s product line sold in the US. Honda, GM, Ford, and FCA, for example, average much higher overall TDC than VW and Volvo. This gives an idea of the extent to which manufacturers serve the US market with local production.

Yeah, something seems fishy. Maybe it's the other way around.
We know where they are assembled, but do we know where the transmission parts are manufactured? What would the score be for a transmission/engine assembled in x but all the parts manufactured in y or z?

So not only are we manual guys, smarter, more handsome, and more well hung (by about 12.5 cm/5 inches if I read the article correctly) than the auto-guys, our cars are also more American.

Will this be the final nail in the coffin for the auto-guys?

Why with a manual transmission? Isn't the MT-82 made in China and the A10 in the USA?
Yeah it would seem that's the case. Part of the article explains that they take into account even if parts are foreign if they're assembled in US it counts. Still dunno.

Sadly I’m reminded of the fact it’s made in America every time I drive mine and something goes wrong, rattles it falls off. Ford US desperately needs to take a tour of their other facilities world wide to see how they manage to build well made cars at a reasonable price in other parts of the Ford empire. A focus made in the German factory is of staggering build quality compared to a mustang.
