It's not about insecurity, it's about not wanting to see one of the most important components that make a sporty car sporty go the way of the dodo bird. The death of the manual may well be inevitable for street cars, but if we can convince a few more people to buy a stick, we can maybe help the bean counters see value in squeezing a few more years out of manual models.
It's not that we hate people who buy automatics (at least not all of us). Sometimes there are good reasons to do so, no matter what car you're buying. It's just that we wish more would choose to buy manuals...
