So I am a long time Mustang owner and fan but sold my GT500 last year and have been waiting for Ford to put an automatic in a Shelby. Sadly it did not happen with the GT350. So I went and test drove a new 2018 GT Convertible Premium 10 speed yesterday and with 460 HP was expecting a monster. However I was surprised the acceleration off the line was not as powerful as I hoped. I was looking for the "pin me to the seat" experience and that just didn't happen. But oddly my 2006 Saleen Mustang which only had 435 horsepower with the Supercharger did indeed give the pin me to the seat feeling. What gives? Is it the new 10 speed auto?

My understanding is that FI will always give more low-end torque, and the way the current 5.0 is built, it's more of a rev engine and you need to get the RPM up into the powerband to get the oomph.

Also, you'll want to make sure that the '18 was in the right setting, such as sport/track, etc.

What sort of gear ratio does your '06 Saleen have and what do the new '18 GT's have? That one thing can make a HUGE difference in the "seat of the pants" feel.

The 2018 PP1 auto is faster to 60 and the 1/4 mile than my 2008 Shelby GT500. less than 4 sec to 60 and 11.83 / 119.50 in the 1/4 for the new stang vs 4.5 to 60 & 12.4 1/4. for a 08 Shelby. What did your saleen run?

My Saleen had an auto transmission and ran 0-60 5.1 and 1/4 in 13.6.

I went from a ScatPack Challenger to a 2018 GT w/PP and had the same comment about low end torque. driving with the shifter in the S mode instead of D makes a huge difference. one thing about these freakin Coyotes is they are very deceptive as to how fast they really are. My 2011 felt so docile that i was totally blown away when it ran a 12.70 at the track the first time i raced it.

Positive displacement blower. To really enjoy the GT you've got to be willing to rev it out, or go and supercharge it.

High RPM, high HP shifting red line to redline flat to the floor seems to be the fasted way for 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. And it sure seems to be the recipe for some fast times in the GT. But I always like a good old saying,"torque puts the smile on your face, HP keeps it there. After owning turbo cars I was also expecting much more from the GT with such good HP numbers. I wanted short shifting grunt and pull. Unfortunately with a N/A it just isn't possible to get low end and top end. This Gt is definitely tuned and built for high HP numbers. After having forced induction I am having trouble going back to N/A also. I just love low end, effortless, roll on power. I don't think I'll get into a GT until I can afford one with a supercharger. If I was racing around a track I sure would love this top end serious power though. I also was in a ride with a gt500 and sure did love that pull. A LOT!!

Nice a 5.0 hate thread. Just don't say anything bad about the 18 front end or you will get it locked.

Wait, your Saleen had 100HP more than my 2003 Mach1 but ran .2 slower?

The most recent car I have owned that gave me a thrill from 0-60 was my 2016 Hellcat Challenger. Great car with loads of power. Had to sell it though because kids started college and needed to eliminate the payment.

Also, as it was a premium (no mention of performance pack), so I assume the car had 3.15 and not 3.55s.

This would have an impact.

Yes, the gearing makes a difference as well, glad I got the 3.55:1. And a bud of mine where I live had me help him with grip after power-adders/ Cobra jet intake/JLT intake for a 2009 GT 500 and the Eaton was wining as I was pushed back to study the gauges!
