Hello all,

I have Pypes long tube headers which they advertise as 1 3/4 stepping to 1 7/8.

I am going big with sleeved/built motor, whipple gen 3, stage 2 blower cams etc etc, and wondering if my headers would be a restriction and if so how much?

Is it enough of a restriction that I should get bigger headers? Will 1 7/8 be enough? Or should I look at 2"? Would 2" be too big since I don't think my exhaust ports on the heads are that big?

Not looking to waste more money, but trying to understand what I need.

Thanks in advance.

Head work? If so run 2" and have the heads matched.

Just from what I've seen over the years bigger is better on the exhaust side. I've seen plenty of NA cars with back to back pulls, same car, same day, same dyno pick up low end tq & high rpm hp with bigger being better. Even more gains on FI to be had. But you also have to consider room with these cars 1-7/8 is pretty close to rubbing & could cause false knock, I could imagine how close 2 inch would be. 1-7/8 is plenty for 1000+rwhp also not to say 2 inch wouldnt pick up even more all things being equal.

Im in about 90k on this car now. Weighing wants vs needs. If i dont need different headers than the pypes i have ill save the money. Especially if id only maybe see another 10hp. If i were gaining 100hp might be a consideration

I would leave them alone & see what your numbers look like then. Stock exhaust manifolds have been pushed up to over 1000whp on turbo cars, I've seen 1200+ whp cars with 1-7/8 headers but then again $900ish is a drop in the bucket to 90k lol. I don't see a Gen 3 (blower only) making much more than 1000whp so i think you will be fine with what you have unless you looking for every last bit for your build. I'm not trying to be a dick but it seems the Gen 3 would be the waste of money when your sleeving a block that can hold much more abuse than the whipple would ever give you without nitrous.

I'm optimistic. Anthony ballard made 1100 on gen 2. I'm doing stage 2 blower cams, with gen 3 whipple. Curious how it will do.

Gen 3 (after selling gen2) will only cost me 1,000 vs a twin turbo setup would cost me another 6 or 7k as a best case scenario.'

You look back and go...damn...that was a lot I've spent on this car.
Or you look back and say, damn what was I thinking. So much I could have done with that money. Because racecar!

I definitely do that. Hence why I hear the oh "Its only $100 or its only $1000" I'm like what will it gain? Cuz over 1000 wheel I can't tell the difference between 20 more horsepower, so is that worth another 1k to me? Nah
