CHUCKWALLA CCW 2-16-20
In an effort to get more seat time and drive as many different tracks as I can, Chuckwalla was next on the list.
This time out, I wanted to focus on car control and being more smooth in turns. I noticed at Buttonwillow, I would chop at the steering wheel and jab the brakes and gas. I know I need practice on this.
Morning prep work has become more of a second nature routine now at the track. Got the car ready to go and was ready for the 1st session.
This was my first time out as group 2 (no in-car instructor) which made me a bit nervous as I had never driven this track before. Luckily, the NASA AZ folks started the day off with a lead-follow for people who wanted it. This was a great help to follow an instructor to at least get the line of the track down. That first session was slow, but I wasn't expecting much for the first session of the day. I was, however, trying to get brake temp data. I have been using brake ducts this whole time and was not convinced they were supplying enough cooling. I purchased Vorshlag deflectors and swapped them out in the paddock but I wanted data before and after. I took temperature readings of the brake rotors immediately coming off the track. This, however, did not go as planned. Since that first session was slow, I was not able to get the brakes up to a decent temperature. Data is shown below.
Interestingly, Marco, the designer of the Vorshlag deflectors was there at Chuckwalla and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his product. He was glad to see I made the switch.
I was able to push the car much harder the second session out; maybe a bit too hard. I almost went off track a few times due to carrying too much speed in the turns. Need to brake harder beforehand. I also noticed the traction control was kicking in A LOT which is not a good thing but that tells me I'm pushing the car. I never saw the TC light come on at Autoclub and may have only seen it once at Buttonwillow. I'm getting more comfortable on track and picking up speed; now I need to smooth that speed out.
Still not fast times but those ARE decently consistent times. I'm happy with it.
Third and forth sessions were very similar. They were both much smoother on corner entry and exit but I started to notice my first cooling issues. I have long been reading about cooling issues with the S550 platform but I figured I would address them as they showed up. The 20 min sessions in HPDE aren't long enough to make the diff be a concern but I noticed my engine oil temps about touching the yellow region of the scale. I think those temps are still fine but I would like to keep my motor as happy as can be to prevent further issues. My options at this point would be radiator, oil cooler, hood vents, or simply run thicker oil. That last option might be the cheapest and easiest solution. I might bump up to a 5w40 for Willow Springs in two weeks.
*I didn't take data on the last session*
Lastly, these Bridgestone S007A tires seemed to slide around a lot more than at Buttonwillow. Maybe I'm just getting faster?? But they definitely seemed to be lacking some grip. By the end of the day, they were coated in rubber chunks; do those hinder their grip??
