I never heard any of my Coyote's tick until I started my 2021 up in the garage with 2000 miles on it. It was loud, there was no denying it was the tick even though I've never heard it. I had mentally prepared myself for it knowing it was very common and not detrimental to the motor. Anyhow it was shortly after my first oil change with Amsoil 10w30...... I listened to it for a minute, opened the hood and stuck my head in the engine, went back to the drives seat brought the rpms up to bring up oil pressure, let go of the accelerator and it was gone.... Haven't heard it since....

Its no longer a myth.... The TICK does exist!!!!!

Serious question: is this the "BBQ tick" sound?

Edit: the camera wasn't pointed at anything in particular. Just wanted to capture the audio.

I needed jump start my Lexus today and used the EB Expedition. Hood popped and idling. "tick tick tick tick"

I've always attributed it to DI. This is a first gen 3.5EB so no secondary port injection. Same sound I had with my Mustang when running an e85 tune when it was fucked up.

I honestly didn't understand the name "BBQ tick". @shogun32 said to me the other day "it's the sound of the electric igniter." Makes sense now. My BBQ setups are charcoal. I didn't put 2 and 2 together. 😐

That is not the tick. Here's a video that has a recording.

Thanks for the vid.

Yeah...count me as one that had never heard that in person before. Anodical evidence; never heard that on my 2020 GT.

For data gathering if anyone is doing such. BG oil since 3k. Now at 32k.

That's the crank moving fire/aft or a rod big end doing the same in it's journal. Either a bore is a smidge off or a big end was ground too thin.

Just be proud you have an example showing Quality is a mere suggestion at Ford.

I don't think it's piston slap for two reasons: 1) Piston slap happens when the engine is cold and piston slap goes away as the engine warms up (pistons expand and cylinder clearance decreases). The BBQ/typewriter tick behaves the opposite - it appears after the engine warms up . 2) Piston slap isn't going to magically appear right after an oil change.

UPDATE - Royal Purple quieted the tick gradually, until it was not at all noticeable....I went back to Motorcraft, and the tick has returned, just as it was before the Royal Purple.

I’ve only heard the tick ONCE. It was from another persons Coyote. I’d probably send the car off a cliff if my own car had that sound every 2-5 seconds.
