Hey all,
About an hour and a half into driving my new to me 2022 Mach 1 home from the dealer (in another state) I was finally able to get up to speed on the highway. At engine speeds between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM in 6th gear, if I give the throttle more than about 15% the driveline shudders. So, at speeds below 60mph, 6th gear is not feasible. This is troubling because my 25 mile drive to work each way is normally at speeds between 50 and 60 mph.

I know 6th gear is not optimal for acceleration, and I would expect it to not be responsive, but is the shuddering normal? I have a 2015 GT that does not have this issue. Both cars have manual transmissions.

Thanks!

(While I appreciate all of the responses, I really want to know if YOUR car shudders between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM in 6th gear. Yes, despite the Ford recommendation is to shift into 6th at 43 MPH, this is probably LUGGING the engine. No, I don't expect to get strong acceleration at this speed. NO, I don't floor the gas at that speed and RPM range. I want to know if MY car is the only one that SHUDDERS. I would appreciate responses from those of you who can give me an answer to my question. Thanks!)

Thats called lugging the motor, you should be in a lower gear. Dont try to accelerate much at that low RPM, its ok to cruise in 6th but if you’re going that slow in 6th you need to downshift to give it much gas.

Maybe an automatic transmission would be more suitable? All joking aside, what you are feeling is most likely the longer gearing on the new cars versus your 2015. You can't give it a ton of throttle in 6th gear at 1500-2000 rpm.

Yeah the Tremec is a lot taller geared than the MT82 in the ‘15. (I know, I just replaced the MT82 in my ‘16 with that Tremec 5160)

5th gear (or 4th) would be more suitable for cruising in the 55mph range.

Thank god the car isnt turbocharged/Ecoboost or he would have blown it up. LSPI (Low Speed Pre Ignition) is a death sentence for turbo cars. Pretty funny to come to a thread about lugging in a manual.

pffffft… 50-60 mph? That’s 2nd gear, maybe 3rd on a bad day around here 🙃

Let-her-eat!!!

Well, the 10R80 actually does the same thing, except it happens when in Normal mode at about 40-45 mph. It will shift all the way out to 9th or 10th gear at low speeds and shudder (lug) if you give it a bit of throttle. It feels like it shouldn't be in such a high gear and should downshift sooner. Running in Sport+ mode keeps it in a lower gear and downshifts more readily, avoiding the lugging. This is my only complaint about the 10R.

I've felt it a couple times in my MACh1 at speeds below 60 mph in 6th gear. Felt like clutch chatter to me!

Yeah, but you didn't actually answer my question. The manual says it's OK to shift into 6th at 43 MPH. I'm talking about much higher speeds than that.

That's funny because I've been driving almost exclusively manuals since 1990 and have probably driven around a million miles on various vehicles in that time. I've never had a car that lugged at 2,000 RPM and asked if other people experienced the same issue when driving as recommended by the FORD manual. Would you like to answer my question? Otherwise I think you're just being disrespectful.

so you answered your own question in a way. If you 55-60 and need to go more than 10/15% throttle you ll need to down shift. If your just gliding barely on throttle on flat or going down grade then keep it in 6 but be ready to downshift because doing that to the car is not good.

My car is a 2022 Mach 1 with a Tremec. My first Mustang, first Coyote, first performance car.

When I'm starting out and bringing the temperatures up, I'll put the car into 5th while doing 50 mph, 80 kph. Once up to temps, I'm most likely in 4th while doing 50.

At highway speeds, 75-80 mph, 120-128 kph, she'll be in 5th; the majority of highway driving is done in this gear. If in 6th, the engine is being lugged, the car, sluggish and unresponsive. I'll consider and sometimes go into 6th if driving at speeds well beyond 75-80.

Once thing I noticed very early on: the Coyote like to rev. Higher RPMs often not seen or used regularly in other makes or models are common. For example, my DD, most of my driving is done with RPMs that are close to half of the Mustang's, just because that's the way that vehicle is setup, engine and gearing-wise.

You're still getting used to the car. At speed, you might by just fine in 6th. But if considering accelerating from that, drop into fifth, then hit the gas.

YMMV.
