Perusing through Ford Performance and other parts vendor websites, I see a reference to the "Super 8.8" rear.

Is this under the Cobra Jet, the S550s, the truck line or is it specifically purpose built based on sourced upgraded parts?

All S550 Mustangs (save for the Cobra Jets, which are 9" live axle) have the new "Super" 8.8" axle. The ring gear pitch diameter is the same, and the swing diameter of the differential body are the same, but past that it has been changed markedly from the old 8.8" axle.

The ring gear bolt pattern is different, the differential itself is longer between the bearings, the bearings are bigger, and the axle shafts are now 34 teeth instead of 31. The pinion gear is beefed up and also has bigger bearings. Its sort of a hybrid of features from the old 8.8 and the F-150's 9.75" axle.

My understanding is that the same basic axle architecture is used in live-axle form for the aluminum F-150 and in Transit vans, but I am not certain on that part.

I seem to recall them saying the super 8.8 is stronger than any of the factory 9 inches they made.

It ought to be, its beefier in almost all ways. At least, that is, in iron carrier form...
