All S550 Mustangs (save for the Cobra Jets, which are 9" live axle) have the new "Super" 8.8" axle. The ring gear pitch diameter is the same, and the swing diameter of the differential body are the same, but past that it has been changed markedly from the old 8.8" axle.
The ring gear bolt pattern is different, the differential itself is longer between the bearings, the bearings are bigger, and the axle shafts are now 34 teeth instead of 31. The pinion gear is beefed up and also has bigger bearings. Its sort of a hybrid of features from the old 8.8 and the F-150's 9.75" axle.
My understanding is that the same basic axle architecture is used in live-axle form for the aluminum F-150 and in Transit vans, but I am not certain on that part.
"....On top of that, upgraded rear axle metallurgy and hardware has supposedly led Ford to say that this improved 8.8 has the strength of a 9.75” differential, and thus has created the name “Super 8.8”".
