Yes, you're probably correct. Sounds like he got a better than typical deal on a new car.....and his mods where swapped over in the deal.

Whether that is more or less than he "deserved" is a matter of opinion. Legal issues are more complicated than simply "lawyer-up, sue his ass and walk away with a fat check".
Agreed. I was in a similar position years ago and I wish it was that simple. I try to avoid lawyers at all costs these days.

I would have expected it to work like this:

Dealer's Insurance Company gives you Market Value on the Mustang and takes possession of the wrecked one.

You negotiate with the Dealer on a new car. They at this point could give you a better than normal deal, because the caused the situation.

Or you could take the cash and go buy a vehicle somewhere else.

I hope that this is how they came to the deal you know have.
