Do people buy dash cams or simply stick their phone on the windscreen and record?

You only have to set up a dash cam once and it'll free up your phone if you use it for navigation etc.

It’s just I’ve got one, but not set up. I was just thinking, is it easier ( or better) to use your phone as your phone could just be stuck to the windscreen?

You do not want to put your phone on the windshield. One day in direct sun could fry it. I use a dash cam the utilizes my phones screen as a monitor. The phone is on a vent mount.

Using your phone is a horrible idea. Install a dashcam, hardwire it, and forget about it. If you have to set up your phone to record every single time you get in the car you'll eventually get tired of it and not do it.
