Hey Chaps,

Just had my decklid sent through from a chap on the forums, it was marked as a personal item, and no money has been exchanged for this.
My understanding is that 'personal items' items sent overseas would be exempt from VAT.

The parcel sent was uninsured and had no valuation on it, however, the Customs has deemed the 'VAT' to be £38 (Which values my parcel at c£190), along with fee's for:
Customs duty: £5.61
Import VAT: £38.58
Clearance Fee (Zero rated for VAT): £8.00

Looks to me like they're trying to rob me blind - does anyone know how i address this?

Equally, i'm unsure how they've pulled an Import VAT of near £40 valuing a rear decklid at a whopping £200! :frusty:

Get your Breif onto them

Mate, they also go by the name of 'Dick Turpin, Unmasked enterprises' :D

But lesson learned, don't try and 'cheat' the system, they're not daft!

Apparently they are; as it's being revoked now using a BOR286 form :).

HMRC explained that they'll revoke it once form is submitted (IE, pay me back), and that they appologised for it but that USPS secured the item for $200 so that's how they identified the VAT charge on it.

I'd probably just have paid that, as I would have figured something was due though not known what. I imagine a lot of people do...

Most would, unless you worked for 2 years on a project for Anti Money Laundering which involved extensively looking at the tax system... For a bank :lol:

The question is though, was it a gift? Or did you pay for it to be a 'gift'?

If the latter, no amount of working for a bank and, to make matters worse, intimate knowledge of the tax system, would make you a criminal ;)

Just to be clear, I'm not on a high horse about it, but any tax evasion is not just stealing from the 'rich', as in Robin Hood, but it's all stealing from the poor.

You got a result, which may or may not be fraudulent:lol:
