Why was the structural casting rib ground down?

Why was the structural casting rib ground down?

Looks like that is the casting parting line, where the 2 outer halves of the mold (Cope and Drag) meet. It normally get's ground down/smoothed out.

I'm familiar with post-cast touch up. I asked because the grinding done on this rib exceeds what I've seen on my own transmission in the same spot as well as on a TR3160 purchased through Ford Parts and Service that I had for some time.
