$17K is completely out of line for a new vert top.

However, they are pretty pricey, several grand for sure. My GT500 was a vert, and after reading a couple of horror stories about guys having to replace tops on theirs it became a factor in eventually getting rid of it.

That and I discovered I wasn't a vert guy.....

Dealership just replaced my headliner under warranty; the price for the parts for the headliner alone was $2200. I have no idea what the labor was because the service guy said they can't charge back labor on warranty repairs. On the Ford parts site, the fabric top is about $5k, so fabric headliner + top = over $7K. Don't know if they are replacing any mechanical parts for you.

When my '95 needed a top, I asked my dealer and they pointed me to across the street to a small shop they use. $1200 out the door for new top and headliner. I can only imagine that the aftermarket companies will step up and lower the cost soon.
It will probably be the same company that makes it for Ford.

All parts are pricey from the factory. Unrelated but equally insane - my passenger side seat wouldn't cool at all. They took a look and the wrong cushion was installed. They ordered a new one (the proper ventilated cushion). The cost from the factory was $1700. For foam.

They ended up just replacing the headliner on mine as well, but the piece continues to break off. I've been waiting to hear from the dealer after a month. They are now telling me they are going to send it to the same convertible specialist (who did a terrible job), replace the same trim piece for the 5th time, and check to see if the frame is out of alignment. Such a frustrating experience for the amount I paid for this car.:(

Now this just happened two days ago -- the headliner got caught on the frame of the convertible when I went to put the top up. I'm just glad the headliner didn't tear seeing as this is the second one.
I'm not sure why the dealer thinks doing the same repair for the 5th time is going to do anything. Feeling helpless at this point.

It is a big deal when I paid $37,000 for a car I've only had the car for a year, and it's been in the shop for OVER A MONTH. It's unacceptable. Not to mention both seat heaters needed replaced, the glove box light switch malfunctioned, the trunk needed repainted due to bad alignment (it was hitting the tail light) as well as the rear bumper, the hinges on the driver's side door are starting to rust, and the driver's side seat leather was defective and started to pull away because of a bad factory cut, among other on-going issues.

So yes, it is a big deal. I just want my car to function as it should and not be in the shop constantly.

UPDATE: The back window brace is still coming un-done up to this point, the trim piece is still snapping off, and the headliner (on the second replaced headliner) is ripping through.
I was told during my most recent visit to the dealership that this is normal for convertibles and there is nothing that can be done.
So, I take it to another dealership and the service person tells me that something is certainly wrong with my convertible - we scheduled an appointment for them later to contact me and say they can't work on my convertible due to conflict of interest of the other dealership working on it and nothing can be done.
Frustrated, I contact my lawyer for lemon law and he states to me that them denying service is not legal and that they most likely are just trying to keep out of the mess.
I took it to another dealer last week and they said there is no way my convertible is normal. They are going to look at it in a few days, so I'm curious what the outcome of this will be. I can't believe this has been going on for over a year now.

To be continued....

I'd lemon law the thing and go to another brand. Or maybe get another one.

Currently in the process of that now, actually! Court date is right before Christmas time! I have no idea what the outcome will be.
Apparently, Ford will usually offer an amount of money a week or two before court hoping that I will accept so they avoid legal fees.
