After having bought a new Mustang in the USA in 1967 and imported it to UK in 1969, I bought a new 2016 manual 2.3 ecoboost here in UK for old times sake.
I enjoy it greatly but I despair about local service quality.
My major Midlands Ford dealership has been consistently poor. For example, it took them 3 goes to replace the dual mass flywheel under warranty. More recently, they could not even correct unusual inner-edge front tyre wear which led to both tyres being ditched. After I went to a local tyre specialist to have a proper alignment done I returned to the Ford Dealer to complain. The Service Manager told me ‘Yes, we use them, too. Our equipment isn’t able to deal with this.’
He had just replaced the tyres and returned the car to me as ‘within spec’ completely ignoring the fact that the front end was badly out of alignment. Yes, this from a MAIN FORD DEALER!
I need a Service and MOT soon and I want a competent motor engineer in the (East) Midlands who actually knows about Mustangs. Preferably someone who can also improve the poor gearshift action which has been awfully ‘notchy’ from new.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I've moved your thread to the UK section. Can't weigh in on the midlands but I'm sure someone else can. There are competent places around, general rule is avoid the main "Ford Stores" and main dealerships.

Modurstang in oxfordshire is your closest good place i would say

gearshift can usually be improved by swapping out the fluid in the box and diff to good oil not the ford standard crap. other people have seen improved shifting with 3rd party shifters and stiffer bushing on the transmission.

If you want somewhere to avoid don't go anywhere near Sandicliffe or Allen Ford. They're so bad it's worth going all the way to the south coast if the work you need doing is only possible through a Ford Store, the options are;

More West Midlands but Jacksons in Henley-in-Arden look after a number of Mustangs (and ST, RS models etc) complete with their own Hunter rig but as they aren't a Ford Store warranty work can be limited. Other than that you're off down to Hendy Performance in Eastleigh for a decent Ford Store that can do all warranty work and after market work. They look after a lot of Mustangs, ST's, RS's etc.

Just on the tyre wear - the Mustang is set up from the factory with quite aggressive toe settings which will wear (and feather) the inner shoulder of the front wheels. It is a good idea to swap the tyres side to side to prevent the feathering (say every 5k miles) and you can get the toe setting reduced to a more neutral setup with a slight loss of turn in feel if you wish.

Peter Stirland and Westbury Ford both have good workshop staff from recommendations on here.

Thanks for your reply. I had a full alignment check and adjustment as soon as I realised that my local Ford Main Agent was worse than useless.
i appreciate your suggestions re reliable service but I’m afraid the two you mention are just too far away for me. I’d like to be able to forge a relationship with someone closer.

if you just want alignment services check your local kwikfit's some of them have full hunter alignment machines and can do all the standard alignment profiles as well as aggressive track based setups.

Thanks. That is the route I took as soon as I recognised the degree of uneven wear and that my Ford Agent couldn’t readjust it.
I went to a local specialist (not Kwikfit) and had it sorted. I then went back to the Service Manager at my my (former) Ford Main Agent and he said ‘Oh, yes, we use them for alignment’ having previously returned the car to me in its original state.
You couldn't make it up!

Without any doubt - always so to Motorsport and Performance for ANY Mustang work!
(other places are available too (GT101, Performance 28, Modurstang, Torque developments etc - and they are all pretty good))

... but for true enthusiastic professional work - take the trip to Motorsport and Performance (MAP)

- both of my Mustangs (S550) have had all their work and servicing at MAP - their total professionalism and pride in their work never fails to amaze me ...

Thanks for your suggestion. They look good.
It is a pity they are not closer to me (they are 2h away).
