Did the first oil change on the '17 3.7 last night. Did the engine design people never talk to any of the other engineers? The oil filter is placed so that when it's loosened, it drips oil right onto the wiring going to what I'm assuming is the electronic steering control.

Cleaned it all up sure - but someone has to have dealt with this? Foil? What? Anyone got a trick that keeps the oil off the wiring / rack and pinion?

Now this is just speaking off the top because for mine I was already dropping her off for something else, but could you position a hosed funnel in there or no? Might need a wide neck to not bottleneck at all though.

I let the dealership change my cars oil one time, never again. They used a shorter filter than the fl-500s and god knows what oil to save money.
Back to doing my own oil changes, 30 minutes on the ramps in the driveway done.

I have a form-a-funnel. i bent it into a shape that wedges into the frame and pushes back against the block to hold it in place.
1. loosen the filter from below
2. wedge funnel under filter
3. finish removing filter from above

I have one too. They should come with the car in a nice tidy package located in the glove-box. The 5.0 is in no way any better located than the 3.7.

Much appreciated. Now in my Amazon list. Figured someone else have to have dealt with this, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks for the form a funnel tip. I've just been covering everything with grocery bags so far.

A free solution is to take an empty windshield washer fluid bottle and cut it up to fit around the filter.

That's not a bad idea either. I'm sure I have one sitting in the garage.

I just use a small ordinary funnel, about 3" diameter. I position it under the filter with the spout poking through the wiring to hold it in place, then stick a piece of 1/2" fuel line on the tip so it will drain into my oil drip pan.

I was planning to take one of those ziplock freezer bags and put it around the filter. Doing the first change next weekend.

I usually just find a fast food cup and cut to size and place under the seal and loosen the filter letting drain into the cup and remove the filter catches 98%of the oil

1) Poke hole in filter with a screw driver - just takes a couple light taps. Drain.
2) Aluminum foil
3) Smile at how clean of an oil change you just did...

Thought the message from the Dearborn employee was telling.
Steering and powertrain are separate groups here. This was probably the result of using a steering setup that's similar to existing cars and plopping it into a platform with a north-south engine. It's little stuff like this that can slip through the cracks of vehicle integration.

I just unfold the oil filter box and position it to deflect the oil away from the wires.
