They can gain, IP information, email addresses, name, etc.

They do this because there's an email address associated with the accounts. If the get the email address and forum password, they know that 90% of people use the same password everywhere, so they now have your email password, and can quickly figure out what banking etc you use and again, they likely already know your password. Password diversity is hugely important.

Since most people use the same ID and password for everything, they may get into your bank account, your email, your retirement accounts. This is why they hack for that info, then sell it to other criminals.
