That’s cool. The auto should keep it ahead of the 350R.

Stills gets spanked by the 500.
The Zl1 has always been ahead of the R:crazy:

I find this to be a strange move by GM because with the 1LE it was all about getting nonsense and weight out of the car. They even removed daytime running lights. The 10L90 will push the ZL1 1LE back over 3900lbs. The manual car only weighs about 3840.
Yep pretty close, Chevy say the regular ZL1 is 3944 / 1789 (coupe w/automatic) and the 1LE is 50 lbs lighter.

It's not strange if the performance gains from it more than out pace the weight difference.

Right. It's about making a number rather than making the car fun to drive.

More info from another site:

I think IF it gets spanked, it will just be a light spanking. Not a "why did you wreck the car" spanking

This is quoted, "In 2017, Chevrolet lapped the 12.9-mile Nurburgring circuit in Germany in the Camaro ZL1 1LE in just 7 minutes and 16 seconds – the fastest ever lap of the track by any Camaro"

With the auto, it should break into the 6's...

Lol, you're dreaming. ZR1 didnt break into 6s, what makes you think the ZL1 1LE will? Im sure the a10 will add even more weight to the 1LE as well too.

Maybe a little....but no one ever dreamed the ZL1 1LE would be 13 seconds faster than the plain ZL1

Logically yes. However philosophically, Al Oppy was ADAMANT that an auto was not going to hit the car. But he hasn't been the head of Team Camaro in a while so whaddaya know, look at that. Apparently nothing.

Hence the word “keep”

Try to keep up.

The point being, the supercharged zl1 will remain faster than naturally aspirated cars that don’t compete against it.

But when it’s actual competition hits the streets, it’s not going to look so great anymore.

Al left his position as Chief Engineer on January 1st. The 10-speed ZL1 1LE isn't something that can happen in a month, but probably 6 months. There's a lot of testing and validation involved, but the vast majority of all of the hardware remained unchanged from the manual 1LE. Al may be gone, but his work will be around for along time. He already spent a year or two on engineering the 7th generation Camaro, And any new 6th gen Camaro was engineered under his eye. And by the time his work on the Camaros becomes irrelevant, he'll be engineering the electric powertrains for an all-electric Camaro.

I agree. I still would not buy it. I like the M6 in it better. Automatics are more for people looking at the scenery going by instead of the twistys in the road.

Supposedly it won't be 6 months but February.

What he was saying - in response to who might have been part of this decision - was design and engineering would take ~6 months, that means with a Feb availability, it had to have been in process at least back in Sept, and Al, the guy who said "No automatics in the 1LE" only left this January (the implication being he was part of the process ...)

As much as I hate it, numbers sell cars more than fun. Look at the BRZ/86. They are VERY fun to drive, but a numbers car it is not. Miata has that same problem but it's solidified it's reputation.
