Best and Worst Mustang designs of all time

As there are several threads recently on the S550 design, I thought I'd put this one out there. Based only on stock looks, what are your favorite Mustang body styles of all time? Worst?

I'll go first:

Best (low numbers best):
1. 1969/70. Best example: Sports Roof (Boss 429/302). All time tops for me, these are just gorgeous cars.
2. 1968 Shelby GT500KR. Period. Very close to being #1. This was the car that was the basis for "Eleanor" in the remake of Gone in 60sec.
3. 1965/66. Best example: Fastback in black (Spenser for Hire anyone?). The original. Groundbreaking styling for the time. A more elegant look to my eye than any of the others and mildly aggressive at the same time.
4. 2015/16 S550. That's right, here's where I'm ranking ours!
5. 2010-13 S197: Best Example: '13 GT Coupe. The 05 was good, the 10/11 better, and I think they nailed this body in the final year.


Worst (Higher number is best, marginally...):
1. 1974-78 Mustang II. Everybody trashes these. I credit them with keeping the nameplate afloat for a while, but still "fugly" to me.
2. 1994-98 First year of the redesign. This style got a good reception for it's retro queues when introduced, but it just doesn't hold up well today. Much prefer the 99/03 body, though the differences are not that great.
3. 1979-82 Beginnings of the fox body. It filled out nicely starting around 83-84, peaked in 87-88, but the early ones looked like weird Fairmonts.
4. 1971-73 Really don't mind these much, but they were too bloated and Challenger like.

Gonna get a lot of opinions on this one

For me… '67 fastback with the '68 a close second. The Bullitt car was my all time favorite mustang, but the '67 style is a little sleeker. :cheers:

Im a fan of most of the Mustang designs thru out the years. The Mustang 2 and fox body era were the worst for me. Everything else falls into the good for me with a 429 boss being my most wanted.

the mustang 2 is awful, except I saw one custom wide body once that was incredible looking. Not even sure what all was done but it was a beautiful frankenstang. Im only 22 and Ihad never even heard of the mustang 2 until about 6 months ago... and I have a 64.5

1985 GT. Last of the carburetors, t-tops... It was a sweet car and pretty much kicked off the 5.0 revolution. Then the '87. First of the aero Fox body cars. Last of the t-tops. That's when it really took off.

the 5th gen looked pretty bad to me till like 2013. I like the 6th gen obviously and the 4th gen probably the best

It's funny how the Mustang II is at the bottom of many people's list. However, it was good for one thing....IFS swaps in street rods. It's still the most common front end swap for the old iron. Most of the original stuff is long gone, but the aftermarket makes everything new.
