My guess, is the fancy odd cooling design became a supplier issue, holding up cars on the line, So they went back to the tried and true 50 year old design That I venture to guess, is also used on another vehicle of Fords or another brand the supplier sells to.
And while the odd cooled ones were back ordered someone with ole school parts store mindset went looking for a part # that work and already on warehouse shelves that ford could buy to get line moving again .
