Wow, you are in Mn. I am in Minn. would love to pop over from time to time and check on progress? look at other cool stuff? I love AWD Cars, what I really wish I had was a Mazda 1988 GTX, those are rare IMO!
Had a 2004 Audi S4 6pd, and now drive a G35X for winter and commuting.
Small world. The ONLY car I regret selling was a Mazda 323 GTX! Not fast, but so much fun to drive.

PM me if you want to check out the project sometime.

I have some 2018 MR spindles coming (use same bearing as the GT350 depicted in the pictures) but use the normal brakes and suspension arms.

I am still not confident in the amount of spline in the GT350 style unit bearings, but the Explorers use the same basic bearing and it has more spline. It will need a hub centric ring to work with Mustang rotors and wheels, but I have done that before, not a big deal.

I have 3D scanned the regular Mustang GT spindle and I have a GT350 spindle and there are two issues with them from an AWD standpoint, CV Joint to ball joint clearance and CV joint to Strut mount clearance.

I had a 94 Mx3 4 cyl, and almost GTX swapped it several times, lol. Kept almost pulling the trigger on the parts. What a cool car, 323 gtx. Turbo awd. A semi-forgotten gem

Following!

Awesome build. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

I researched doing an AWD conversion on my 69 Mustang. If I ever decide to go that route, looks like lots of 96-01 Ford Explorer stuff would work.

Episode 2 is up.

I was WRONG about the Explorer hub. It has the same spline, but it will NOT bolt to the MR spindle. That is a bummer.

But, I am making great progress.

Yes, I am not an expert machinist my any stretch, but I have a 3 axis CNC milling machine.

I will have some footage in my next video.

If you get this pinned down and built correctly, there's a good chance of being in the forefront of coming out with an AWD conversion kit. Find a good local shop to make the parts you need, sell the kits with or without the transfer cases...
I'm located in NE Nebraska, shoot me a message if you want to toss ideas around.

If you went this route, you would change the s550 game in a lot of ways. A big undertaking but man would that be awesome, especially if it can handle a decent amount of power.
