Cross-thread from general forum. It was suggested to post here:

I am a brand new first time Mustang owner with a 2017 premium ECOBOOST with performance package. Purchased from a local Ford dealer with 20k miles. I love the car and the previous owner kept it flawless and serviced. I would like to do some upgrades right out the gate that will keep my warranty intact like the FP tune along with some other upgrades y'all have recommended like a catch can, intercooler, spark plugs and one of the BOVs that works with the OEM. Not sure about exhaust yet.

So I called a local dyno shop and they told me they don't touch the Eco and no one in AZ will. She said not to do the tune and just enjoy the car because I won't be able to get everything out of it with out anyone dialing in the tune and the internet guys that will would just be throwing my money out the window on the highway because they can't do anything accurately over email.

Can anyone respond to this with thoughts and how I should proceed? I'm not a car guy but my brother is and he's had several mustangs including a new gt350 so I have someone to help me. I'm in the beginning stages of my research and what they told me has me a bit bummed out. What can or should I do to this car that will give it some pep without going crazy and still maintaining warranty? Or is it really not worth investing in FP and some minor bolt ons? Any advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I would say that he is profit motivated. And, I would never do business with him. That aside, I have had Procal tunes on all of my Mustangs and I can honestly say that I was surprised with the difference in performance. You certainly can't get a safer tune than the Procal.
By the way, don't mention his name on here. I think it's considered rude.

I call bullshit. Your dyno shop has no clue.
Pro tuners are not email specialists.
You will be sending them live datalogs with the exact conditions of your car and they modify based on that.
I did 5 datalog revisions with Tune+, and several after subsequent mods.
Car runs super strong and miles above the stock tune.
2 years and zero issues.

many have loved the Ford tune, while maintaining the warranty. This is where you might want to go.

Sounds like the guy doesn't have any experience with the engine. I highly doubt that nobody will touch it and you could always just have a Ford dealership install the tune if you decide to go with the ProCal. It's not a real flexible tune, so if you want to do a lot mods, it might not even be the best one for you. I have the ProCal tune on mine and I definitely think it was worth it. It feels like a different car. Very large increase in torque while still maintaining drivability.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any other mods with your ProCal tune?

Yeah, I have step colder spark plugs, a Garrett intercooler, CVFab catless downpipe and AP Dominator glasspacks. I also have charge pipes I need to get put on. I could make more power on a aftermarket tune but this is fine as my daily and for backroads. There is a noticeable bump in torque and way more life above 5000 rpm.

I had a Procal for my 3v and now on my Coyote. I don't notice the extra torque they claim for my Coyote at the low end and overall not much is different other than the terrible lag when the engine is cold.

Ford Racing claims a big peak torque boost although the gains above 5,000 rpm is more impressive. Although peak horsepower is up 20 or 25 horsepower, the gains at higher rpms is said to increase by 100 horsepower. I've driven a stock Ecoboost and was impressed. Anyone on here just running a Procal on theirs?

If a dyno shop told me they don't touch EB's, I wouldn't want them to touch mine. And I wouldn't expect them to have any knowledge about EB's, either. Just cross that place off your list and keep looking for someone with a clue.

take your money somewhere else. Might be one of those places that only tunes those archaic carburetors things

Stay the fuck away from that shop - look up user Bull Run on these forums (I believe he is also in AZ) ask him for advice, profit

I have all CP-e parts for FBO and a custom tune by CP-e that took about 12 revisions to make

It is amazing. That is all.

My 14 GT is Procal Tuned. I ran 12.9 before and 12.5 after the tune.

If you want an AZ based tuner, check out Arizona Elite Motorsports (https://www.arizonaelitemotorsports.com/). I went there for a dyno session and an assessment of the existing tune. Bill impressed me due to the following:

1. He doesn't have an EB, but he does have a turboed Mustang GT and knows the characteristics of F/I cars.
2. He could've told me that my tune was crap and sold me a tune and nGuage (he used HPTuners) but he told me that the tune was on target and he wouldn't change anything because he would've tuned it the same way. He was quite impressed that the tune was done via data logging 3rd gear pulls up the highway onramps and sending logs via e-mails.
3. He pointed out a small blip past 6000 RPM on the dyno graph. I thought that was a normal "jiggle" on the graph, but he stated that looked similar to other F/I cars with incorrect plug gaps that exhibited spark blowouts at high RPMs. He asked me to check the gaps and even offered to re-gap the plugs for free if I didn't have an adjuster for Iridium plugs.
4. I checked the gaps later once the engine cooled down, and sure enough, they were all over 0.032. Since the adjusters are cheap, I just bought one and re-gapped them to something like 0.024.
5. I took the car back for a followup dyno. Not only did he not charge for the followup, but the car gained almost 10 WHP with no signs of spark blowout.

Only drawback is that he used a Mustang Dyno that tends to read lower than Dynojet and it's hard to compare results since they aren't as popular.
