Yup, the automatic. With the manual I always know what gear I'm in by touch.
It should be possible since the selected gear shows up in your instrument cluster when you are in "S". The gear number shows up just to the right of your mileage.

Good luck since I don't think that there is a sensor on the car to tell you that, unless you have an auto trans.

If you're driving stick, you don't need it ;)
