I have the pleasure (or burden, depending on how you look at it) of owning a 2000 GT and my 2016 GT. Here's the story of mine.

Got the car at the end of high school and it taught me a lot about respecting power (not that it has much by today's standards). I had already gotten into wrenching on my first car, a Jeep XJ, but this opened a whole new universe. It was about going fast.

The mod list:
MGW short throw
K&N intake
Professional Products 75MM TB and ported plenum
UPR X-pipe
Mac Flowpath catback
J&M weight jacker LCA's
Roush springs
4:10 gears
RAM HD (I think) clutch
RAM billet steel flywheel
"Self tuned" via Diablosport
17x8 OEM and 17x10.5 Bullitt wheels
PREVIOUSLY I had a 125 shot Harris Speed Works wet nitrous kit

It served DD duty from 2006 until 2012 (I believe) where it ventured out to its last Mustang Week (I grew up in Myrtle Beach, so I attended yearly) when it went on jack stands. I decided it was time to pull the axle and rebuild the rear. The gears always whined and I was getting really bad one wheel peel. Hard nitrous launches on DR's ultimately did the clutch and rear end in.

Fast forward, life happens and it just sat. 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016... I had enough. People we asking to buy it and I was close to letting it go. I put on my big boy pants and started making a conscious effort to rebuild the rear end in the garage. Well, come 2017 I had an opportunity to make a massive career change which required relocation. Axle went into storage and the car sat. 2017, 2018, 2019... then COVID happened. I thank God I did not lose my job, but we were shut down for about 90 days, a decent chunk of that I spent back home.

I went to work like a bat out of hell:
Rebuilt the rear, LSD with carbon clutches
New front calipers (old ones were seized)
Brand new shoes (with some meaty Mickey's out back)
Oil, trans, coolant changed
Fuel pump
Battery
Idler pulley

The car made its first drive in May 2020. It was around the neighborhood on dry rotted tires and sticky brakes. The sound of that old, catless 4.6 bellowing to life and propelling the car under its own power was overwhelming at the moment. All the good times, races, hanging out with buddies all came back in that moment. I left the car nearly ready to hit the road (needed registration, new tag).

We returned in November. Game time. Got the registration, tag, tires and brakes squared away. Now the real test - driving it back 670 miles from South Carolina to South Florida. ZERO ISSUES! I half expected to get and hour or two away and it shit out, but no - the car drove with a vengeance the whole distance. It was the coolest shit ever. I love this pile of shit, even though it now needs paint and I have A LOT of work to do to bring it back to "nice" condition. I love to beat around in it - despite the fact it's claustrophobic, handles like a barge and is waaaaay slower than the 16.

Back in its prime:

Nice man! I had a 2016 and sold it back in January and picked up a 2002 Roush Stage 2. Always been a fan of the New Edge body style. I actually had a 2001 Bullitt years back.

I've been setting up the Roush for some light duty on open track days, and for having 146k it does surprisingly well!

I had an immaculate 2002 until a few years ago. All stock...so it was slow. 😆
But I loved the look of the New Edge.

Liked the look of those better than the bath tub of the gen before them .
But back then a clean fox body was a better deal, as you got the car and could throw 3k of parts at it, and run rings around it and still have money left over for 4 years of fuel and insurance.

Nice! Do you miss the 16 at all?

Very cool to have had two special edition new edges.

Love the seats, what kind are they? I would like to do the same... brakes and a lot of suspension.

Wow, super clean! They are definitely slow stock by today’s standards. When I was running 13.9’s (on motor) I thought I was Billy bad ass lol.

Haha - don’t hate!! Although the best years of the prior gen was definitely 94-95. The 96-98 4.6 was wheezy and had nowhere the response or suppose to mods like a 5.0.

Fox guys loved beating up on these cars. Especially notch owners and brag about how light they are. Now I am amazed at how light this car is compared to the S550.

I've always liked those cars. A buddy has an 04 GT convertible that he's brought back to very close to showroom condition. It got me wanting one to play with and restore. That's actually what started the journey to owning an S550. Was out looking at a couple one weekend and stopped in a dealer to look around. Ended up test driving a 16 then the 18 I ended up with. You could have knocked me over with a feather when the wife said I should just get the 18 and use it for my daily...

not a new edge but have a 95 GT i bought at 16 about a week after getting my license. fall 2016 i blew a head gasket, at least thats all i thought it was. ended up buying a vortech for it and decided to do the whole engine and replace bearings. good thing, found a bent rod that took out my stock block as well. i had already done a 331 stroker with forged h-beams, crank, pistons, so how i bent this rod, i dont know. it only made 306 rwhp, so not much. now it has a DART SHP and i just need to install it in the car. trying to fix up some rust in the engine bay before it goes in, and also clean everything. just got a new throw out and pilot bearing a few days ago to put it, and new clutch disk/flywheel. money has held this project back! trying to figure out tuning it, probably go with a Holly Terminator EFI kit, that's another $1200. but fun as you mentioned to work on the older ones, even though they're already so behind the S550 in tech. you definitely dont see many of them on the road now, which makes it even more fun for me. here's to hoping i dont get it in and blow up my stock T5 😬 ill have to go easy on it. im sure a TKO 5 spd is in the car's future but right now i just want to drive it again, been sitting since sept 2016.

some nice looking SNs/new edge cars in here!

Yes and no for various reasons. Yes, because it's an absolute beast! The power output from the Coyote 5.0 is just insane! And I had a full exhaust, lockout kit, and some other goodies. It was awesome! But, I don't miss it because I'm super particular with my vehicles and was always afraid to take it out and about, to work, to dinner, etc. I basically would take it out on Saturday and drive around, and then put it back in the garage. I didn't even take it to a track event in fear of tearing it up. So, because of the nature of how I valued the car, I don't miss it. With the Roush, I drive it everywhere, park it anywhere, take it to open track days and beat on it hard, and then drive it home in the rain, and put it up wet, and go to sleep with a smile on my face.

Long story short, I have less than $10k in the Roush, and the paint is rough, and a few things here and there need fixin. If it gets tore up, it's not a huge deal.

Very cool to have had two special edition new edges.
Ya, what can I say...I'm a Mustang guy!

Corbeau DFX fixed back seats. Surprisingly comfortable for a road race bucket seat. I drive 2 hours one way to the track, and have no issues with comfort. I did a custom rear seat delete since the back seats are now useless and heavy. I got the Corbeau harness bar and Corbeau 4 point harnesses. They work well for what I need.

I put some run of the mill Power Stop drilled and slotted rotors on. I go through a set of performance pads every track day. The New Edge is a heavy car and eats up brake pads quickly.

I haven't done anything major to the suspension other than replacing the ball joints and tie rod ends with greasable joints, and replaced the sway bar and end link bushings with prothane bushings. With the Roush Stage 2 suspension package, it does really well on a road course. Minimal body roll.

And yes, it's not fast, but it's super fun!!! And it's hard to beat the New Edge body style.

Yep, 260hp at the crank and weighing in around 3500lbs...not a whole lot to work with, but, as you mentioned, can't beat the look of a clean New Edge!!!

I've had mine since 04, bought it from the finance guy the dealer. His wife didn't like it because she couldn't get the baby car seat in or out lol. Practically a steal.
