At the request of another member, I've decided to give my two cents on my recent switch to Firestone. I came across this set at about the same time someone else had discovered them on Tirerack for a very good price. I decided to pull the trigger on some 275/40/19's. I would like to let everyone know that I am comparing these tires to the stock Pirelli's and the 275 Sumitomo's I was running after those.
Upon receiving the tires I immediately noticed how aggressive and fantastic the tread on these tires looked. Needless to say, I was a tad worried about how the ride and the noise of the tires would be. After having them mounted I can't begin to tell you how much better these are visually than the Pirelli's or Sumi's. I know that isn't saying much, but when you've got some wide tires it can definitely make a big difference aesthetically. Now on to driving feel.
I immediately was able to bring the car on to the highway and test out the noisiness and overall comfort feel of the tires. I can say that the tires aren't all that noisy at all, I may be a little bit tainted as I have a Corsa catback that's a tad high on the volume chart. But they're definitely less noisy and more comfortable than the Sumi's. They definitely pick up and transfer more of the road than the Pirelli's into the cabin. I don't mind this, as I was looking for a better performing tire at a good price point. So I'll finish up with the performance aspect.
WOW. What a huge difference between the Pirelli and Sumi's. I actually even used the Accel. G's on the built in MFD function to see if they really had better traction. Sure enough, I went from a .74 in grip to .78. Now I know that may not seem like a lot, but when you've tapped out the rest of your car's potential for acceleration (FRPP Suspension and BMR Cradle Lockout) and you can get any sort of gains from a launch by simply switching tires (that cost the same as the Sumi's), that's amazing to me. That's how I validated this purchase, and would gladly make this purchase again based on what these tires cost. They also grip substantially better through the turns, but I did not have metrics to actually measure that, I simply went by pure feel when I heard the tires start to give out. In most cases, I will bitch out before the tires lose traction through a turn. I plan to take these on Limerock in the Spring and will add to this review with what I've thought about them during the track section. I hope this helps some of you who have thought about buying these tires.
To recap: These tires are well worth the money. You sacrifice a bit of comfort, gain a good amount of performance, save some cash for other mods, and get a slightly quieter tire. Definitely a win in my book.
