2021 Ford Shelby Super Snake spawns speedster body style

Shelby American on Saturday announced its Mustang-based offerings for the 2021 model year and included in the range was a new Super Snake Speedster.

The Super Snake is based on the Mustang GT and offers buyers a supercar-like 825 hp, thanks to a supercharged version of the 5.0-liter V-8 that powers the donor Mustang. Impressively, buyers can pick a manual transmission instead of the standard automatic, which isn't the case for many high-horsepower cars today.

The Super Snake name traces its roots to the one-off Shelby GT500 Super Snake experimental car that Shelby built in the 1960s as a demonstrator for Goodyear and its Thunderbolt tires. It featured a V-8 from a Le Mans-winning Ford GT40 and was last sold in 2019 for $2.2 million.

The modern Super Snake is the current range-topper of Shelby's Mustang-based lineup. The car features not only powertrain upgrades but aerodynamic and chassis upgrades, too. There are also special touches inside, including a custom instrument cluster.

The Super Snake in speedster guise is a strict two-seater. It features a custom tonneau cover over the rear, and as an option a wide-body kit can be added to give the vehicle an even tougher stance. Other worthwhile options include a track-ready suspension package from Penske.

Pricing for the 2021 Super Snake starts at $133,785, or $79,995 if you supply the donor Mustang GT. The upgrade can be applied to Mustang GTs dating back to the 2018 model year.

Shelby plans to build just 98 examples of the Super Snake Speedster for 2021, in recognition of this year's 98th anniversary of the birth of company founder Carroll Shelby. The company will also limit regular Super Snake production to 98 examples for 2021.

The same will be true for the non-supercharged Shelby GT based on the Mustang GT and hardcore Shelby GT500SE based on Ford's Mustang Shelby GT500. They are priced from $62,310 and $104,900, respectively.

So about $20,000 in upgrades and $60,000 in the Shelby name slapped on it. Seems about right.

Yeah I know they could at the very least least change the dashboard to carbon fiber and parts of the interior to alcantara

I think it looks pretty cool but for $130,000 this wouldn't even be on my radar.

The odd thing about this relates to my tour of the Shelby "plant" in Vegas back in 2019. The old guy that does the tours (his name escapes me, but rather well known in the Shelby circle) was showcasing the current projects in the shop when we came upon a GT convertible. His comment: "Why the hell anyone would put that much horsepower in a covertible is beyond me". I guess they had a change of heart.

Hard top or soft top? I'd prefer a hard top...

Those wheels are really nice. I'd assume super expensive?

It's a convertible with an aftermarket taneau cover. The covers are available for any s550 convertible and, if I remember right, is a removable 3 piece unit that will store in the trunk.
Since the ad says it's a dedicated two seater I'm wondering what they have done in the rear seat area? Perhaps some structural bracing to counter some of the extra HP maybe?
Still, it's a convertible so I don't see how it could be rigid enough to really use all that power...

This.

My '07 GT500 was a vert and, despite Ford's attempts at bracing, was a handling turd. I'd wager this car is better, but never again for this guy, lesson learned.

It's a looker though.

Would have liked to have seen the piece covering the back to be more streamlined and more closely matching the original lines of the car. Seems to be just a big piece of plastic sitting on top.The sides aren't bad, but I don't care for the sharp drop off where it meets the trunk. Though like someone said, even if it was perfect, I am in the market for a different car at $130K. Though let's be real, I'm not!

Yup just a big, likely fiberglass, piece on a Mustang GT convertible.

There are a few threads in the convertible section where M6G members have put them on. This thread has a install video.

I wouldn't put one on my car but they do add a certain retro look to the car. The ad calling it a custom cover is IMO somewhat misleading. Yes it's specifically designed for the s550 but custom to me doesn't mean a bit of fiberglass you can but off the internet.
