Overheard a conversation in Detroit area a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like there will be a version with carbon fiber hood, fenders and wheels. Not sure if this is an R version or normal GT 500, but ain't going to be cheap if it's true.
Carbon fenders make no sense to me from a cost to weight perspective.

For the money they could sprinkle carbon elsewhere and get more for it.

Agreed

That money would be better spent on the trunk, door skins, or (optimistically) the front subframe

Someone mentioned composite fenders and good earlier I thought. In fact they said it might be heavier than the aluminum counterparts lol.

It’s more of a gimmick really.

I like to disassemble things.
The thermoset fenders and hood will be SMC (sheet molding compound). Continental Structural Plastics will be supplying the class A panels to Ford for the GT500.

The hood and fenders will be bonded and riveted to form complete panels. And while CSP does offer a carbon fiber SMC I do not believe you will see it on this car, yet anyway. The SMC offers a large advantage in terms of the cost of tooling, as much as 50-70% less than that for steel/aluminum panels and is just the ticket for low volume vehicles such as the GT500. The hood might be close in terms of weight to that of the GT350 (for example) as it has a large void for the louvered section. The fenders may not be as light as a GT350 fender but are likely to be the widest on the S550 chassis to date.

If those horsepower and torque numbers are legit, doesn't it seem as though Ford could get 800 horsepower out of the car safely?

I hope they’re using the light weight version of their SMC, because the traditional stuff is heavier than the sheet metal counterpart

:cwl:

We might see 100 less than that. Maybe.
Still to fat for my taste regardless of horse pair. Car will be fast none the less.

Previously Mike Levine mentioned on his IG acct if the Easter Egg for the 2018 Mustang that showed the numbers of "4 & 55" on the dash pic was caught by the viewers, the 18" came out with 460hp so I hope the dash pic for the GT500 that I seen somewhere showing the numbers "7 & 72" means that the HP numbers will hopefully be between 770hp and 780hp...I HOPE!!!

Even still?

That Easter egg was prior to some of complications had with the drivetrains I thought. Reading between the lines here from some of our insiders. 780 would be a lot.

If so close they wouldn’t they push just to say 800?? Doesn’t quite make marketing sense

780 is what I was told. They were working on more. If that turns out to be false, then I’m going to be angry at the person who said it.
