I thought I saw that it was some kind of plastic composite. Same with some body panels I thought. Reference some of the YouTube videos interviewing the designers and engineers.

A hood that an oem would utilize only a single shock on...would need to be pretty lightweight.... Ahem.....
Which might still actually be heavier than the GT350 counterparts, but a step in the right direction!

The hood and fenders are SMC.

The hood is likely to be heavier in SMC than it would have been were it made from aluminum. It's all about cost, hence SMC.

And yes, only one gas strut or shock. Don't need two if the hood is fairly rigid and the geometry of the single unit is reasonably close to the center of the hood. Two main pivots are the hinges.

It make sense to me that ford replaces the roof skin with this SMC too. Even the door skins. It’s still possible, although would they have to crash the car with new door skins? I’d doubt it as they’re not structural, but I’m not sure. Ford may have engineered the skins to be partially structural. Some (lots, 50+ lbs) could be saved there between those three pieces.

No SMC at those locations.

The fenders could be considered "structural" insofar as their contribution to the overall vehicle's rigidity is greater with them installed than were they not. The hood, not so much.

There are lots of things we think may be very reasonable and that Ford could have done to pull weight. In the end, this one is over budget, and as everyone could agree upon - late. I'm as intrigued as everyone else is at what Ford may have considered doing but ultimately bailed on. Extended use of composites or aluminum. Fender vents. A second transmission choice being made available. I do think that in the end the balance that was struck between new and innovative hardware/ideas and cost to the consumer (sans any ADM poppycock) will have been a good one.

The biggest reason to do this in SMC is to reduce investment. It's a more expensive hood (not sure on weight), but the tooling is far less than an aluminum one. There aren't going to be enough of these sold in the few years it'll be around to pay back the investment for a stamped hood.

Best look yet under the hood. Single strut, rain tray, and hood pins.....

Very Interesting. Looks good. However, the capped-off open element air cleaner is visually a bit disappointing.

I found a patent on the airbox but ignored it for that very reason. I'll have to look at it again.

Stumbled onto an obscure video from the Chicago Auto Show staging area. Noticed that the hood was open, then Grabbed a few screen shots for those of us who are obsessed with the details. Glad to be of service.
