So I just got a 2019 Mustang GT Manual with 1,700 miles, when I checked the oil life, it says it’s 17% oil life, I checked the oil myself and it looks clean but looks like it’s on the bare minimum, should I just go get an oil change from Ford since I still have Ford points to get a free one?

The OLM uses an algorithm to calculate the expected remaining life of the oil, and one of those values is purely time. So even though it's only got 1700 miles, if it's been sitting for a while it's going to be lower than if you just had driven 1700 miles over a long road trip.

With 1700 miles it's most likely on the original oil fill, and being a 2019 MY it was probably built in 2018 or early 2019 so it's been sitting a vast majority of it's life. After almost 2 years the oil is most definitely on its last legs so I can believe that 17% life left.

since the car is new to you and you can get a free change, I would change it. Especially if it has been sitting a lot.

It's ticking out on time. The car will call for an oil change at 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. The car likely had its last oil change (or its original in-service date) last June and will call for the next one in a few weeks.

If you have FordPass set up, it should tell you the date and estimated mileage where it will call for the change on the "Vehicle" page.

I have a 2019 GT.(bought January this year)

Currently at 36% oil life with 4056 miles.

Planning on doing the first oil change at 5k miles.

Will be using amsoil signature series 5w30.

Get the free oil change from Ford. make sure they put in 10 quarts!

Make sure the dealer puts 10 quarts of oil into your mustang after they change it for you.

Glad I saw your post. I would definitely get your oil changed soon, especially since it is free.

My '19 GT was built on 1/3/2019 and I bought it with 40 miles on the odo a little over a month ago. So it sat on the dealer lot for at least a year (or wherever else it may have been... wish I could find out).

Right now I have 1,548 miles on it and oil still shows 88% life. Oil looks clean and has remained at the proper level (I check it frequently). So they must have changed it fairly recently I'm guessing?

I know it probably sounds stupid, but I want to know if they did or not. Guess I'll call to see if they can tell me anything.

It’s interesting with low mileage you have only 17% life left???? Just have to wonder why when now 10k changes are available which I would never go 10k maybe 5k. But why is at 17% with just 1700 miles on her and the only thing I can figure out is she’s now over a year old and past her service. My diesels require a 1 year oil change no mater how many miles. So yes get the oil changed it’s a very small amount of money spent for a really great long term investment.

Yup. It's probably going to burn 1 quart at 1k miles. So check it often. Get the oil changed now since it is calling for it. It isn't 100% based on miles.

No, that's the factory fill. The oil life timer starts running when they take the car out of "transportation mode" on the ECU.

Seriously, people, the oil isn't going to go "bad" just because it's sitting in the sump for a year with the engine not running. The reason they put a one year life on the oil for an operating car is that not hitting 10k miles in a year means you're likely doing a ton of short trips, so the oil isn't getting hot and isn't boiling off the condensates from blow-by.

"But I don't want old oil in my sump!" Really? How long do you think the stuff they're putting in could have been sitting on the shelf in the parts department?

Hey it shows 17% so time to to get it changed. Post 2 explains it pretty well. The oil life monitor (OLM) recommends oil changes based on time (1 year) and use by criteria that is built into the algorithm. Mine was changed at 5 miles on the odometer..but that is when the supercharger was added at the dealership.

Because oil life is not just based on mileage, time is also a factor. Seeing as how it's the original fill from 2018, it's almost 2 year old oil.

Most manufacturers recommend not going past a year on oil regardless of mileage.

Thing is, back in the Olden Days, oil was (is) organic, and would go rancid, so you had to change it every year despite the mileage. With synthetic, it doesn't rot. If you do not know what rancid motor oil smells like, go to a wrecking yard.

I'm more concerned that it's already at the end of the dipstick at only 1700 miles, not the oil life lol. With that said it is what it is
