I have a 2018 mustang gt and I bought the gt350r steering wheel. I just found out the hard way that the airbag I have isn't going to fit in the new steering wheel. The lock in tabs have been repositioned in the new 2018's from what I can see. Can I just purchase an airbag from the 2015-17's and work fine?

Also there's a 2 wire connector which I believe is for the horn has been changed. I'm sure I can flip the male on the harness.

2018 also has heated steering wheel (at least GT premium), so make sure you're not mixing those up if you have it.

The airbag will cost a pretty penny. Contact Beith Performance and see if they will make you one and you can just sell the GT350 and avoid the headache

Funny, you’re going backwards and I’m going forward. I have a 2016 that I’ve upgraded to the new 18 digital dash and I’m installing the heated wheel as well. As you and I both found out, a different airbag has been designed for the 18’s as compared to the 15-17’s.

The two wire you’re referring to is correct about the horn and you won’t have to change the connector because the 15-17 air bag has the matching connector that is on your GT350 wheel.

To answer your main question, yes all you need is a 15-17 air bag. I had to buy the 18 air bag for this project among other parts and I’m very close to finishing. I will have my 16 air bag for sale very soon if that interests you. Looks as new as the 18 I got.

Here is a pic of the back of both air bags so you can see there difference. The upper left is from my 16 and the other is an 18.

Cool, that's all I needed to know. Mine doesn't have the heated steering wheel and its an automatic with the paddles. So I had to transfer the harness with the paddle shifters. Its no biggie, I can always cut the plug off and solder the other one. I would of purchased it from you but I purchased one off ebay yesterday because I couldnt find anywhere else for a decent price.

Thanks

You’re good to go then. No worries about the air bag; these projects will get more popular with the 18 models wanting the GT350 wheels so my air bag won’t last.

Yeah I found out the hard way as well unfortunately...

I went to put my 350 wheel from my 15 on the 18 and ...... sigh

I do have a heated wheel but really in Az not sure I would ever use that feature - maybe if it was cooled lol...

On the heated wheels they have a small pair of micrscopic wires that appear to be for a thermal sensor maybe?? that are also in the way if you are changing harnesses on the heated wheel.

Are the connectors for the airbags physically the same?

Just to clarify a GT350 wheel on a 18’ Mustang GT needs a 15-17 airbag? I am beyond flustered trying to figure mine out I have a badass steering wheel installed with no airbag at the moment :(
If your wheel is from a 2018+ it needs a 2018+ Airbag. If your wheel is from a 15-17 it needs a 15-17 airbag.

Are you saying a 2018 GT350 airbag? My 2018 Mustang GT airbag did not fit into an 18+ GT350 wheel.

My understanding is that if you have an 18 GT350 wheel your 18 GT airbag will work. Are you certain the wheel is from an 18+?

That is what I am trying to figure out as they do in fact not match up.

You must have had an older GT350 wheel, not '18. '18+ one swaps into GT without any problems, airbag fits.

The OP has a 2015-2017 GT350r wheel. The air bag from a 2018 or newer GT will not fit a wheel from a 15-17 GT350 or GT.
