It looks like Tim over at MPR got his hands on a 2018 block. The engine looks like it received a pretty drastic update from Ford. For reference, this is my sleeved 2011 block. It looks like they put some added material along the top of the cylinder bore to try and prevent the bores from cracking when approaching the boost necessary for achieving 1000HP as well as completely revising the water passages of the engine. This block receives the plasma transfer wire arch spray bore that the 11-14 GT500's & GT350 received as well. Pretty interesting what Ford did just from a very limited glance at the engine. I don't remember seeing a cut away of the engine on display at any of the auto shows.

The 15 block was pretty much identical I believe to the 11-14 blocks except for the head stud size was change once again

Running higher compression could also be the reason.

How so? I haven't heard of a design change to them and Ford Performance's Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 reference guide never made any mention of it despite listing other engine block differences.

Just go poke around for pictures of a 2015+ short block or bare block, you will see what I mean. I included a link to a factory short block from American Muscle, has a picture there. Water jackets look nothing like your 2011-2014 block, and look identical to the 2018 block you posted.

You do realize the 18 block is the top one? They look completely different than the link you provided..

No i didnt, my bad. :headbonk:

The top one looks like a huge step down in cylinder support with those enlarged water jack openings.

No way, look at the supports at the major and minor thrust sides. The sides of the bore don't matter nearly as much. Looks like it has mounting pads for 4 knock sensors?

Either way, I bet it is going to be put to the test awfully quick if it is in MPR's shop. Hopefully, the block will finally be as strong as the 4.6 blocks were

I see a big change in these water jackets, however I'm curious if the change actually improved the strength of the previously known failure point when running boost or if it simply moved the failure point to the space between the cylinders.
