GREAT!!! Yea those are my exact symptoms. Hahahahaha. Keep us posted on if the noise goes away after the repair. I sure hope it does!
I would hope. New short block, timing chains/tensioners, cams. I could live with the tick. Not so much metal shavings in the oil pan.

Did you change the oil and find the shavings yourself or was it done by Ford?

No. Tech noticed it when investigating the tick.

Is this the cause, think its a thrust bearing issue. Whats your opinions

Sure sounds like it could be the source. Is that a rod bearing he's moving back and forth on the crank journal? Any other rods do it?

why is there so much play has something given up, what keeps them spaced correctly.

Oil is what should keep them apart when the engine is running, but there shouldn't be that much movement even when the engine is off. There's no oil thick enough to keep those two bearing surfaces away from each other when the crank is spinning. Those are really bad tolerances either from the factory or it was rebuilt with faulty components.

The rod bearings side clearance

Here's the rod bearing side clearance spec from the service manual. What controls this clearance is the machined width of the crank journal, and the side skits of the rod bearings when all this stuff is assembled together.

Either the car came with very bad tolerances from the factory, or they got worn down from inadequate lubrication. I'd expect a metric shit ton of metal shavings if they wore down by themselves.

In either case, those surfaces are probably very beat up from the movements. Did it get disassembled for inspection?

so the side skirts have given up, can this be done form under the car assuming the crank isn't toast.

The clearance was probably close to the max to begin with, and with some miles and wear the side clearance increases to the point where random ticking starts up at certain RPMs that cause the rods to move back and forth on the crank journal. That might also explain why some engines tick more than others, and when they start to tick mileage wise ... based on what the rod end clearance was to start with, and how much wear happens over time.

Could be all caused by one journal on the crankshaft not being machined correctly and being a bit too wide to give the proper rod end clearances when everything is assembled. I would think the rod bearings are all pretty consistent in size and all have the same skirt dimensions ... but if the crank journal is machined too wide it's going to have too much side clearance when both rods are assembled on that crank journal.
