So I have a 2015 GT Premium with a destroyed 5.0 engine with 172,000 miles (cyl #7 piston nuggets). Looking thru the build forums about rebuilding or replacing the stock motor is coming up short. So if there is already a good thread to go to, please let me know. It appears that any post out there is several years old. Product availability, pricing and technology is out dated in the posts i have found. I am looking for some up-to-date info about what i should be looking for or to do.

1) Should I go for OEM Gen 2 replacement long block? Seems like they are all out of stock. Same for crate motors.
2) Should I be looking to upgrade to a Gen 3 crate motor? In a 2015, would that mean a new ecm and wire harness? What else?
3) If going a short block route, Gen 3 seems readily available, but then i would need to source Gen 2 heads and the rest of the accoutrements.
4) Or go with a Gen 3 long block? Same follow-up questions a 2 and 3 above.
5) Any difference between Ford Performance(Speed Shop Direct???) or Ford Racing? Should i be looking at different sellers that specializes in Coyote engines for a budget minded build? Promar has good reviews on refurbished engines. Any thoughts on them?

There is not another car out there that i would rather have, so getting mine back on the road is my only option.

Any 2015-2017 crate engines (aluminator for example), or manufacturer engines do not exist anymore for this platform. Couple of options in my mind as Ive thought about this before. Find a salvaged working motor in an older Gen 2 car for a direct replacement. Buy a fully built long block (10-20k+). Find someone to 'fix' your motor.

Ever since the gen 3 came out, starting in 2021'ish, most manufacturers have ceased any readily available option for the 2015-2017. If your still stock, find a replacement motor from a salvage yard or something that runs, replace it n sell it

hi
I just built a sleeved gen2. After going though all the options it was the best decision for me being in Australia. And as I want to go boost I went all out On the build.

If you just want a stock motor. It’s pretty hard to beat buying a gen3 short block and using your gen2 heads on it.
due to it age and mileage. you will need new lifters , rockers , probably worth redoing the valves , you will also need timming chain kit , new cams phasers , oil pump , gasket kit etc and the list goes on…..

simplest option is buy a gen3 crate motor and bolt it with out the dirrect injection.

are you staying stock or going boosted in the future ???

Just get a gen 3 bottom and add your heads. Aluminator or whatever.

Due to the age and condition, it might be better to advertise it as a race car shell.

Plenty of used engines out there, but it is a crap shoot.
Plan on 10k+ for an engine purchase and swap costs.

Rebuilding yours will be close to the same.

Regarding power, having attened plenty to track days that feature all generations of mustangs........even the Aluminator cars, GT350's and Gen 1 on, are pretty fast and loud.

Excellent feedback guys. I really appreciate it. If Gen 2 new replacement is not available, then i am leaning toward Gen 3, especially for the direct and port injection reason. I haven't taken the heads off yet to know how bad they are, but if they can be rebuilt, then i might go with the Gen 3 short block option.

You will not be able to use the DI, without getting the gen3 PCM, electronics and wiring to make it all jive. You can get a motec as it will work with your gen 2 components. If your heads are indeed trashed, and can't be rebuilt for whatever reason, then junkyard or procure new gt500 units.

I think you guys are on target. Lots of good information out there using Gen 3 blocks with Gen 2 heads. It seems the camshaft generations, intakes, and timing sets are the components that will dictate which PCM and harness is needed.

Correct u need gen 2 timing components because you have gen 2 heads, PCM and electronics. This is also the reason you can easily upgrade to predator heads, although I think those cams also have 14mm of lift. The heads themselves flow like gt350 heads.
