2015-2018 Voodoo Gen 1 vs 2019-2020 Gen 2

Hey all

So I’ve got a 2017 GT350 and honestly I love this car.. it’s incredible. But there’s something that’s been gnawing at me and that’s all the recent engine failures the first gen voodoo engine has had. I heard they made improvements for the 2019-2020 voodoo gen 2 engines but I can’t find out what those improvements are. Are those significantly more reliable? I plan on owning this vehicle for the rest of my life so I want to make sure that I’ve got a reliable engine and won’t have to replace it in the future.

Ha I would argue that any 'changes' Ford made to the 5.2L were to only make manufacturing a 2nd speciality high HP/high $$$ car even more profitable.

I would recommend checking out that thread oranggrower posted. The changes were significant enough for me that I decided to pay more for a 19 vs purchasing a used 17 or 18. The changes were not exclusive to only the engine and suspension. Some of the interior tweaks/cosmetic went into my decision as well. If you are happy with your 17 and it's not giving you any trouble I would stick with it. You may want to up the power train warranty past the 5/60 if you plan on keeping it long term. Enjoy the car, don't worry about what could be... there are a lot of folks worrying about what could be with the latest flu virus.. If you look through history there is always something people can spend time worrying about.

Ah, the 19's and 20's are breaking also, so what's the big deal. Small percentage of cars affected. Yeah, just keep a powertrain warranty in effect for as long as you think you will need to feel secure. Nothing else you can do about it.

2015 prod numbers were very low to begin with. Not sure about the 16's but seems like a solid model year. 17 seems to be the most suspect year in my opinion. The 18's got new ring and piston packs at some point during the model year assembly process. Personally, I think the 18's have held up the best so far given the quantity produced. Tho if looking for a used one, I'd go with an 18 manufactured after the new year. Early manufactured 18's saw some 17-esque issues. 19's had/have QC issues right out of the gate. Verdict still out on 2020 really. Anyway it's year 6 of 350 production. Doesn't seem Ford is really all that worried.

What are those 19 issues to share? Do tell. I do a great deal of reading on more than 1 forums as well as Facebook groups. I have heard of isolated issues but have not heard that the 19 MY has issues, other than pre 19 owners that don't state their sources. Never understood....an attempt to keep perceptions the old ones are just as good? In any case, interested

- Someone says the 16s were all good...you bet that person has a 16.
- another guy says the best year so far was 18...guess what, he has an 18.
- then always the guy who points out that everyone elses MY cars are breaking just as much as the MY that he owns.
