I've been wanting a Carbon Fiber steering wheel for some time now.

I purchased my 2107 GB GT350R back in August 2020 before the market went crazy. I really like the Alcantara GT350 steering wheels but thought a carbon fiber one would make the interior visually more enjoyable.

Carbontastic came highly recommended with Youtube stars such as Daily Driven Exotics (DDE) and Stradman having their wheels built by Carbontastic.

Company: Carbontastic (Not made in the USA)

Wheel Build: Gloss Carbon Fiber, Carbon fiber steering wheel trim Alcantara Top Red Stripe, Alcantara grips, Red stitching, Alcantara airbag cover with Red Stitching.

Wait time: 5 weeks, Required signature from UPS upon delivery

Cost: $1350

Warranty: 1 year from cracking or yellowing

I started researching companies that made carbon fiber steering wheels and it's definitely overwhelming. There isn't a ton of detailed information out there on how or where they are made. Most seem to be made overseas, a few companies do produce them in shop, including Mustang Carbon and MPR out in Las Vegas, NV. It's hard to tell what the quality of the carbon fiber/alcantara/leather will be from company to company. When spending over $1,000, you'd hope all of them would be top quality. I did talk to a few companies such as, Mustang Carbon, Dynaperformance, Carbontastic and MPR. All of those companies responded fairly quick with any questions or to share information on ordering and shipping etc.

I ultimately made the decision to go with Carbontastic, they have a Facebook Page and Instagram account for more of their work as well options for all vehicle models.

I went with Carbontastic because their price included the interior trim in carbon fiber, tax and shipping. I was able to have them use a Red Alcantara as the top stripe instead of the painted stripe. I wanted to get an Alcantara airbag cover as well, so ordering their airbag cover I knew their alcantara color (black) would match perfectly. I did do a red stitching as well which looks great in comparison with the red stitched in the OEM "R".
I was sent a confirmation email, ensuring all the options I ordered were correct before Carbontastic started building my steering wheel. The lead time was noted as 5-8 weeks. I did place an order around 2nd week in September and I received it the end of October 2022.
I was sent a picture of the finished product and was notified it would ship once it was cleared by quality control. The wheel underwent quality inspection for 1 week before being shipped out.

The wheel was shipped by UPS and required a signature for delivery. It came well packaged in a cardboard box with Carbontastic shipping tape. It was wrapped in foam wrapping and bubble wrapped. I will share a few pictures of the steering wheel packaged.

I will be installing this hopefully here soon, even though its in winter storage already.

Pics to come fully installed, follow @Rare_R_260 on IG for more pictures.

I was unsure of the Alcantara top stripe. It was something i hadnt seen before and thought id try it. If i were to do another wheel, i would rather choose a Red leather or just painted stripe.

Looks really nice! Does the airbag cover just slip over the existing airbag?

Basically, I had to pry off the OEM plastic cover. There are tabs that hold the cover on top the actual airbag assembly.

The alcantara material with Shelby snake is placed/covered to a seperate plastic cover, the one i received happened to be a regular mustang OEM cover.

It did take me a minute to remove, unhooking the plastic tabs without breaking them or heavily scratching the OEM cover.

Just remember the orientation of the airbag assembly and cover when removing to properly reinstall the new cover.

Awesome, have you installed it? What does it look like on the car?!
I have not installed it on the car quite yet.

I had issues with the carbon fiber interior steering wheel trim, shown below are pictures of the quality issue with the carbon fiber steering wheel trim.

The tabs/mount holes on the rear of them broke when trying to install the screws for the steering wheel controls.

IMG_20221107_143636769.jpg

The ABS material used alongside the Carbon Fiber, molded for the mounting screws are horrible. Trying to install the OEM screws for the steering wheel controls, the molded material broke off into pieces. These seem to be cheaply made, NOT HAPPY!

I am still currently waiting for a replacement set, i got ahold of Carbontastic and they claimed they have never had this issue. I have been waiting over 2 weeks now for a replacement steering wheel trim set.

Steering wheel looks great! Re the broken pieces, thats always the trouble with aftermarket items. They’re many times close, but not perfect OEM. It’s also always worrisome pulling off trim pieces with plastic snap tabs…over time the plastic loses elasticity and easy to snap even if you’re careful.

By the way, the “never seen that before“ is such a load of crap. How many times have I heard that? Gee I guess you got the one bad one….

Re their alcantara, do they offer charcoal gray (that matches the stock wheel)?

From what I asked, no they do not match the OEM alcantara color. They told me they only offer Blk alcantara. There are other companies that might offer that color more like the OEM charcoal grey.

Yes OEM parts are never correctly replicated in the aftermarket world, I was hoping for closer than what I received though.

Carbontastic delivery came, my NEW 2nd set, Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel trim. Upon inspection, these are a way better quality than my 1st set that came with the steering wheel. These came with screws, the screws they provided were smaller in thread diameter than the OEM screws that hold on the electronic controls.

Installing these new pieces went smooth this go around. I figured I was all dialed in at this point. I had already switched the airbag covers and I was ready to install the wheel and airbag into the car.

Installed the Carbontastic steering wheel, hooked up the airbag and electronic controls, pushed the airbag into place and BAM!!! Looks killer!!
IMG_20221207_094056205.jpg

Hooked up the battery and ....whoa......the horn is staying on!
You cannot switch any wiring as all the harnesses only attach 1 way. So I unhooked the battery and removed the airbag for further Ănspection. The Carbontastic airbag cover I received has the running pony on the underside. I'm not 100% sure if a regular Mustang GT is different than a Shelby airbag cover. It is possible, the years could be the cause of slight airbag cover differences as well. The 3 tabs are pushing the 3 horn buttons down making contact, causing the constant horn alert.

I have down some research and I've found conflicting information about the differences in airbags/airbag covers that could be the cause. I have contacted Carbontastic and they are currently looking into this as well.
Carbontastic did mention they would rebuild one, hopefully it's a 2015-17 Shelby style airbag cover. I believe looking at them, the Shelby airbag cover seems to have a higher dome in shape, where the Mustang One seemed more flat?

I removed the airbag once again, I have now installed the OEM airbag cover and it operates flawlessly. I will continue to run this setup until I hear back or receive another alcantara airbag cover to try.
