Hi,

I'm looking at putting 20" wheels on my 2019 Bullitt, but have a potential issue I wanted to see if anyone could shed light on or had come across.

The rules as I understand them are that you can't go down from the original tyre load index. The standard GT seems to be rated at 101, but the Bullitt has 105 rated tyres on the back (275/40R19 105Y), which rules out the 305/30R20 Michelin 4S, and most other tyres that size, as they are 103 rated. There's a 295/35R20, but that partly negates the point of spending 5 grand for bigger and wider wheels and tyres.

Does anyone know if it's model specific, or if the GT has a lower rating can I go with that?
I'm going to talk to tyre shops on Monday and will try Mustang Motorsport to see what they've done with the Bullitts they've changed wheels on, and will update the thread, but if anyone has any insights in the meantime that would be a helpful start.

Cheers,
Matt

Just an update with my own conclusions;

From the VSI 26 - Roadworthiness Requirements:
"The load rating of tyres on vehicles subject to ADRs must be at least equivalent to the minimum ratings shown on the tyre placard."

My placard says 105 for the rears, so looks like I'll be going with the 295/35R20 Michelins. With a bit more sidewall they'll look good anyway, so I'm happy with this option. Not worth risking insurance not paying out if I go down to a 103 rating for the 305/30R20s.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks Graeme, great looking car, including the tyres!

It sounds like all the new Mustangs since changing over to Michelin will have this 'issue', not just Bullitts

Hi Matt,

Not sure on other tire specs in the Michelin range, however you could go the Michelin Pilot Super Sports the rears being 105Y and stated as Extra load here's the specs compared to the stock wheels. There's plenty of meat on the sidewall...

OEM: Performance Pack Wheels
Front: Pirelli 255/40/R19 96Y, 19x9" wheel width, +45 offset
Rear: Pirelli 275/40/R19 101Y, 19x9.5" wheel width, +52.5 offset

Aftermarket: Vorsteiner VFF-101 Wheels
Front: Michelin Pilot Super Sport 275/35/R20 102Y Extra Load, 20x10" wheel width, +40 offset
Rear: Michelin Pilot Super Sport 295/35/R20 105Y Extra Load, 20x11" wheel width, +50 offset

I wouldn’t sweat the difference between a 295 and a 305.
