I guess you mean the sidewalls were a little too thick, yeah, the 315/35 is a little taller sidewall, too much sidewall and it starts looking like a truck tire.

The series, the 30/35/40 is a percentage of the width (the 275/285/305) that the widewall is tall, so if you maintain the same sidewall series, like a 35, and go wider, the tire sidewall (and overall height) will also increase.

The 275/40 is a good bit taller than my 285/35:

Above is from a good tool to knock around with - has a neat visualization too:

So after more consideration, and it being a DD, Iā€™m thinking of going squared. Same wheels as before but 20X10. Here are the specs:

Wheel Specs

Size: 20x10
Offset: +42mm
Backspacing: 7.15
Lip Size: 2.25"
Weight: 28lbs
Lug Pattern: 5x114.3

Iā€™m looking at 285/35/20 as mentioned before. Good square set up in your opinion?

One consideration with that setup is whether you will need spacers in front. +42 offset is about the max you can go without rubbing the suspension on the inside. At +42 it probably depends on the wheel. I know of at least one with 285 tires and +42 with no spacers but I've seen others with +40 and needing spacers.

My buddy is running 285/30/20 I believe and I'm running 275/25/20. Neither of us have clearance or rubbing issues on +42 all around but with a 35 profile you might be pushing it.

the other wheels I'm looking at are a +38 offset. Think the 285/35 will fit that better? I just don't want to run 275/35 all the way around on a 20X10.

No plans to lower for a bit. But when I do Iā€™m glad I know Iā€™ll need lower profile tires. Thank you!
FWIW, me and @1bad66 are both pretty lowered (I'm on BMR SP080s), and we're both on 35 series, I know I haven't had any issues (well, other than very occasionally running out of rear travel, but BMR has a new product to solve that).

The 285/35 tires will fit fine on both wheels. All other things equal, +38 is less likely to have clearance issues than +42, but I don't know for certain. Both might fit fine without spacers but I just wanted to give you a head up about the possibility.

I see that you are running 285/35 on 20X10 ET35 and lowered, so I'm thinking with my offset of 38 I should be ok as well? I have everything in my cart and I just want to click purchase now. Lol.

Thanks for the info. With MaskedRacerX having pretty much the same setup, but with a 35 offset I should be ok with 285/35 on a 20X10 ET38.

Well, it's 3mm less inner clearance, that's just a little but the front is pretty tight in there (I also have Brembos). They should sit really nice, it's just 3mm more inset on the front, and 1mm on the rear (vs. my setup), so it will really tuck in nicely. Are those sold as a "Mustang fitment"?

Yeah, if there was concern over inner suspension contact, a pair of 2-3mm spacers would be cheap, very safe, and basically change it to a 35-36mm offset :)

Thanks again for your help man. Iā€™m going to pull the trigger. The wheels are Rovos Pretoria for mustangs. The link says for rear wheels only...nah. lol.

Nice! Should be a solid setup, and like I said, it's just a (cheap), space away from my exact fitment.

BTW, I got my Nitto G2s from AM, they had by far the best price (in total, with shipping factored in ... which was free), and I cross shopped all the usual suspects, Tire Rack, Discount, 1010, etc., they had good customer service too.
