I'm going to go on record and say that despite being an owner of 10+ Mustangs, I'm hoping the GN wins. GNs, Foxbody Mustangs and 3rd gen camaros were the cars I grew up with...long live the 80s!

I’m with you brother. I actually have this dream of putting an e85 tune, etc. in and going back in time to blow the doors off those ‘fast cars’ back in the late 80’s early 90’s :)

This sums up most people who are not car enthusiasts. Your average commuter car is going to feel plenty peppy for them and since it's all they know, they start thinking they are fast. Probably assuming that sports car making rumbling noises at 10% throttle is racing them, and all of a sudden they start racking up "wins."
Haha, yep.

If the Buick Grand National has a upgraded turbo you can be assured he has upgraded fuel injectors and a upgraded chip.Just Saying because I have owned three of these cars and they will run 11.20ET 120MPH with very few mods.

I once bought an '83 Mustang GT (157 HP rating IIRC) from a kid who told me "It is fast!" I tried not to act condescending. $750 was a good price for a CA car, though.

I agree with the others that traction control is your friend assuming you will not be at a drag strip.

It's been a long time since I've looked forward to two cars going for a run.

We had issues with the elevation and fuel mixtures at times as well. The thin air up here causes detonation pretty easily. We got real good at playing with timing and fuel. In the upper gears we came down on the top end rpm a bit. In essence just short shifting. In fairness we would strip weight out of the car at the track. I have to admit, I really regret ever selling that car. A lot dont like the look of them but I still think there sexy as hell.

We just always ran into detonation in the top of third in hot weather on pump.

I grew up in Flint (buck city). Great cars with a fantastic 3800. I've had multiple cars with 3800's. They were known for they're acceleration (0-60 not roll racing) more than anything else and that engine is one of the best engines every produced. That's why you see so many rust bucket Buick's and other cars (Pontiac grand prix) still running around. But they're slow as fuck by today's standards. He would need a basketball sized turbo.

But if I was him I'd challenge you to a race from a dig. That's their bread and butter and even thought that shouldn't be fair either he has a much better shot with that turbo v6

That will be an interesting race! Almost all of the GN's I saw racing stock went mid to high 13's. We raced at Quaker City Drag strip in Salem , Ohio. It's called Quaker the Breaker because it goes up hill near the end of the quarter mile. It's about 2 tenths slower than it should be. My 84 Monte Carlo (1987 GN drivetrain) ran mid 12's with Eagle GT tires, 93 octane a TA-60 turbo and chip. Car ran low 11's at Norwalk with a TA-61 turbo. The 2003 Z-06 Corvette I raced numerous times ran 12:70's at 112.00. I ran mid 12's at 108, that's what torque can do! I only lost once to him when the wire came off my alternator. The GN tests referenced before I'll bet were either 1984 0r 1985 GN's. They didn't have an intercooler and ran high 14's. The 1986 and 1987 Regal T-Types and GN's were a different animal! Given the GN has a bigger turbo, it could get interesting! The 18,19,20 5.0"s with the 10 speed auto are amazing! Hard to believe, but they can run very high 11's STOCK! That's what 33 years more technology can do! I had a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere 426 Hemi that would run mid to high 13's totally stock. My 2015 Ecoboost Premium PP auto and Ford Performance tune would easily stay with it! That's almost 50 years difference in technology!

A friend of mine had a 1989 turbo Trans-Am pace car that had the GNX engine in it. He would always bring up an article, might have been Motor Trend, that stated in the road test it was the fastest 50-70 mph car they had ever tested. The problem with that car was the transmission didn't seem to be up to the task. He went through 3 transmissions while under warranty. After the third one Pontiac told him 'don't come back, you're done'.

That could be for sure. GM seems to on occasion make a gem of an engine that basically can't be killed and then surrounds it with shit. 3800 and 5.3 (before afm) in their trucks are examples
