I had no idea the Nitto’s were garbage. I picked up the 255/45/18 NT555 G2’s for $250 for the pair brand-new. I guess I made a mistake…….

Having said that, sounds like I’ll need to do more research into other tires in the 295-305 size range. I didn’t realize to stay away from the Nitto’s. Thanks for your opinion/suggestion!
yeah its ok, you didnt know.

Nitto 555G2 - they’re cheap as hell, but they’re not good tires. In the dry they dont put power down very well at all and in the wet they’re basically garbage.

the weight saving on your setup are outstanding but what will that equate to? With low grip tires the car wont stick to the road particularly well even with featherweight wheels.

The ride quality should be really good, but without tires that grip well, its not worth it.

look into the A052 tire, its lightweight AND grips extremely well, but like most good tires, its going to cost more than the nitto 555G2

long story short - the tires are the most important part of the suspension, hands down. Every other part is trying to help the tires work their best. If you put a lot of thought into all of the parts of the suspension, including wheels, but slap poor tires on it, you’ve defeated your own efforts.

pick the tire first, then pick the wheels to optimize the tires, then look at the rest of the suspension. When Ford wants to make a “handling” package for a Mach 1, what do they do? First they spec a high end tire which will be guaranteed to give great performance numbers (Michelin Cup 2), then they throw on ever so slightly stiffer springs or whatever and talk up how special the suspension is. In reality, its 95% due to the high end tire.

If you’ve got them and can’t return them, use it.

This is the internet where everyone has a billion bucks, in real life the NT555 (and basically every other tire) is just fine for daily driving.
Fine for boring stuff but not fine when you actually expect to get what you’re paying for in a sports car. You’re paying for 2 door sports car insurance prices, might as well get the performance too.

also, you have more options than just to return the tire or run it. Tires in nearly new condition are also easily sold online (for a slight discount). Plenty of people need tires, and cheap ones will go quick.

Friends dont let friends drive nittos.

Absolutely!

I don’t need to be sold, the Michelin and factory equipped traction control have saved my tail a few times on the backroads.

Thank you so much for all this information and feedback. It really is helping me.

Having said that, What are your feelings about the Hankook Ventus R-S4's?

I think the Nitto's are out. Plenty of bad things expressed about them here.

Having said that, what are your opinions of the Hankook Ventus R-S4's?

I haven’t tried many tires and honestly it is very hard to go off of others opinions on tires. IMO 90% of people don’t push their car or know enough to give tire suggestions.

So I can’t give you any suggestions about the hankooks. I’ve tried Michelin super sports, r888r, nt555G2, and nt555R2.

Super sports were a lot better than the G2 but they only lasted me around 12k miles. The R888R lasted only like 6k miles but grip was really good. The Nt555R2 is a semi drag radial and it lasted like 8k with really good grip but it’s made to be on the rears only.

I am going for MPS4S for my next tire on the front and going back to the Nt555r2 for the rear. The reason I am going with the MPS4S is I’ve heard it’s a really good overall tire with long tread life. It’s supposed to be on par or better than the super sports but last longer. I am switching to a 17” rim in the rear and going for the nt555r2 as a drag radial. Currently due to the converter I can’t launch hard and I’m n/a so not worried about having the best tire or I would go with a MT ET street R in the back.

Maybe you could lay out your goals with the car and that could give us a better direction to point you in?

The RS4 is an edurance oriented 200tw summer tire, which means its really pretty good. I’ve driven (briefly) on then in another sports car)

Because it is what it is, you could expect it to start very sticky and then harden up and loose grip as the miles and months go by (faster than a street tire like the MP4S or Continental ECS might, but not as fast as an autocross type 200tw tire would get hard). Basically you might want to throw it out before it actually wears out, but you should get plenty of miles out of a set.

i cant remember offhand if its good or bad in wet conditions.

TL;DR I would absolutely try a set of RS4s. I think the MP4S is probably more well rounded for a street tire, but when new and in the right conditions the RS4 should be grippier than the MP4S. I wouldnt run or expect either to do well in anything below freezing, so if you need a 4 season tire, look elsewhere.

G2's are a 30000 mile tire. They are good for what they are, but they are a harder compound so less traction.

They are not good for what they are. They are some freak hybrid of a summer tire and all season tire that manages to be terrible at everything.

MPS4S is a 30,000 mile tire...

The G2 can't put down a stock mustang gt power in 110* heat, it can't take moderate force of the stock brakes, it can't drive in the rain.

I am dead serious that the nitto nt555r2 drag radials are better in the rain than the g2s.

Probably better off with some Ling long sport tires 🤣
