I have been following this thread thinking i would update my 17 from version 3.0 to version 3.4.

Anyway, i visited my daughter this past weekend and rented 19 Edge with Sync 3 version 3.3. other than the nav showing the next turn in the digital dash of the Edge and three choices of back ground themes i did not see anything compelling to make me do a back door update to 3.3/3.4.

Am i missing something?

It's highly unlikely Ford will ever formally update the 2016-2018 cars, especially since they use newer maps.

New maps - for free. Update takes the maps to 2018. If you have a 2017, you're probably on 2015 maps.

I swapped my wife's 2015 Explorer Sync 2 to a Sync 3 with Nav from a 2017 Explorer and updated it to 3.4 using cyan lab's method. The maps on the Sync 3 Unit had to be several years old because a 5 year old Hwy near me was missing.

The GT500 has the same physical system as the 16-19 cars and it uses 3.4 so no reason not to.

If we install this "pre-release" update, we are still going to be able to install the released update whenever Ford releases it, right?
Only newer releases than the ones currently installed.
If you're now on 3.4 you can go down to 3.3, but not to any iteration of the 3.0 release. File system layout is fundamentally different and the reformat tool only knows about the file system layout of version 3.3 upwards.

It's my understanding there's some internal changes to the 19-20 APIM (from the 16-18). Since the software is being written to specific set of requirements, it's __possible__ Ford may not. There's both a "Will it run?" consideration (like the APIM went from 1GB to 2GB main memory so the code won't even execute), and/or a user experience sort of concern "It will run, but really crappy."

And this is where the unofficial update becomes funky. Cyanlabs has found a way around the update to the APIM. So what happens when you try and load an official Ford update. Well the first thing the update looks for is the current version and hardware. At this point I think it will fail because of the old APIM. Now for those you did do the CL update hopefully they will continue to provide them. Of course is 3.4.1 totally exceeds the capability of the older APIM all of you will be permanently stuck with 3.4 unless you swap it out. Of course having 3.4 is better than 3.0 assuming everything is working. Personally I'm sticking with 3.3 until the official 3.4 comes out. Why? Well after dealing with Microsoft and Apple for decades I just do not trust Ford and I want to keep my warranty intact.

Just updated my 2016 Mustang to 3.4. Latest build as well.

I made a video on the process:

FWIW, I see in the notes for the iOS Beta 13.4, there's something about "Additional Navigation Display something-something CarPlay", so I'm thinking __if__ people running Sync 3.4 aren't getting supplemental navigation info on their dash when using CarPlay, it's possibly because that isn't actually implemented yet! (Not sure if it will be limited to the full LCD dash or not ...)

I was under the impression that we get directions from google maps using android auto in the little LCD in the analog instrument cluster.

I have tried both android auto and carplay (latest versions) and there's nothing showing up..

Is that only for digital cluster?

I'll try out the beta later and see if this does anything for me
