Another 10r80 transmission with low fluid from the factory. Wouldn't even register on the dipstick. Had to add nearly 2 quarts.

Did your car have any symptoms which forced you to check?

A big part of me wants you to be right. But when everyone says their transmission is very smooth, and mine jerks me around on the downshifts, I just have to believe something is wrong. Whether that be a hardware, software, or temperate issue I do not know.

Haha I also drive around the problem to, but I shouldn't have to. I can avoid it by never slowing down or stopping. But at the end of the day, its going to happen and be unpleasant.

Want to trade?

From what I have gathered over the almost year of owning this car and reading countless posts about the 10R80, seems to me that about 7/10 have a smooth transmission while the other 3/10 have nothing but problems or complaints.

Mine accelerates and upshifts wonderfully, but the downshifts? They are genuinely awful, so bad in fact I cant see how Ford would release such a bad product.

Without a doubt, the 10R80 is my least favorite transmission I have ever used.
Just curious, do you know what temperature the trans is at while you're experiencing this? I know somewhere I believe in this thread I had posted about how my Mach 1 acts and how crazy long it takes to get up to proper operating temp per ford takes. When mine has been up to or close to "normal" operating temp it seems to shift perfect, however, at any point before it gets to that point mine has very hard down and upshifts at times if I have it in sport/sport+ mode.

Yes it would sometimes hesitate and slip before shifting gears. Especially under heavy throttle.
Did your trans warm up faster when it was low on fluid? I would assume so with more friction

Only real problems I've had with mine and I've had it happen twice in different gears I wanna say 2-3 and 6-7 under WOT vehicle bounced off rev limiter or that is what it sounded and felt like before shifting. 2-3 was in normal mode and 6-7 was in sport with the shifter.

Honestly not sure.Never really kept an eye on transmission temperature. My concern is how much damage has been done with nearly 20000 miles of driving with low fluid.

Same thing has happened to me. Hopefully adding fluid to the proper level solves it.

Reading a bit thru this thread now thinking hmmm... so I have a 2020 GT with under 7k miles. Driving along in Sport mode is peppy and shifting up and down based on road conditions. How do you tell what's different from Sport handling and what is "harsh"? I don't have enough history with the S550 and this transmission to know. I know jerky vs. smooth for sure. Tips?

All temps.

On a hot day with lots of driving I might be able to get the thing to 170F. It will still do hard downshifts - but they will be slightly softer than normal.

On a Winter day (or anything below 60F outside) the downshifts were awful all the time, very very harsh. The transmission would struggle to reach 100F even with over an hour of driving.

Downshifting has never been good in this car. The cold weather and trans temp makes things worse for sure. Its bizarre too because upshifts seem to be perfectly normal at all temperatures and conditions.

**All in normal transmission mode**

Yea I definitely have some cold weather around here as I live in Northern Minnesota. I have a 31/32 mile commute to work and 20 or so miles of it is on a stretch of 65mph hwy. I have made it to work from driving on that road and some stop and goes through town and trans was still not up to temp on any days at or below 50 degrees. Can't believe how long it takes to get up to temp. I just won't use anything outside of normal mode on the trans unless it is up to temp anymore.

FYI:

TSB 22-2139, SUPERSEDES 21-2357. This was just released in April 2022. It pertains to harsh shifts due to adaptive learning incompatibilities. PDF is attached in below link (go to last page of the link):

https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/th...ost-recent-tsbā€™s-in-here.102918/#post-2336328

If an S550 10R80 Owner had 21-2357 completed under a warranty repair and is still having harsh shift issues, schedule an appointment and tell them you want 22-2139 addressed.

I'm getting a little push back from the dealer about doing this TSB. My trans performs pretty well overall. But I'd still like to have this latest TSB implemented. I can't exactly lie and tell them that it is intermittently bad, because they won't find anything wrong during a test drive.

Suggestions?

Only thing I've noticed so far is when I downshift (using the paddles) from 8th into 7th it hangs for an extra half a second. The rest of the gears are lightning quick

Iā€™m in the same situation as you. Performs good most of the time but has its quirks sometimes. I made an appointment and spoke with the transmission specialist at my dealer. He said donā€™t mess with it if it isnā€™t broke. You may cause more problems than itā€™s worth. So Iā€™m not going to mess with it. I will get a Lund or PBD tune soon probably. This will make everything better on the A10 .
