Seems to be common for the oil filter to be cranked on pretty tight from the factory. This, coupled with the close quarters placement, can make it quite a challenge to remove. I found the perfect filter wrench at NAPA if anyone's interested. It helps to puncture the bottom of the filter too....

Here's a tip for those having a problem getting the filter loose. I have one of those tools and it still was hard to get a good grip on the filter. So I took a piece of notebook paper and fit it between the filter and the wrench. Worked great and made it easy to break the filter loose, a paper surface has 7x the coefficient of friction than steel on steel.

Good find. No slippage? Torque specs on filter are 17 ft-lbs or 23 n-m which would explain why they seem pretty tight. Probably for vibration resistance.
