Pinion free play

I pick up a used Differential and I can Twist the pinion yoke back-and-forth about quarter to a half inch is that OK or does it need to be checked out

I don’t know that why I said quarter to a half inch maybe three quarter of a inch..

You can't tell with that method for a backlash check. You could be feeling pinion and spline lash combined. You should pull the cover and have a tech look at it. The lash between the ring and pinion gear is paper thin when correctly set and needs to be checked around the circumference of the gears to find a possible loose or tight area in the gear set.
