What's the consensus in here? Some say 5w30, some say 5w40. I'd like to give Amsoil a try. My car is a daily driver but gets driven properly and will see 4-5 track days per year. It's a GT PP and it will be staying N/A.

Thanks all.

You won't get a consensus. :) I've run 25+ track days with Amsoil 5w30, a couple on Mobil 1 5w30, and now Amsoil 0w-40.

I ran a couple on Driven FR50 form Joe Gibbs racing. Temps and pressure held nicely all day in mid 80's Alabama heat and humidity.

How were the temps with the 5w30? Was the switch to the 0w40 just to try something different?

I am gonna say 5W30. 40 might be a bit thick for the bearing clearance.

FWIW, I am currently running Amsoil 0w40 in the car for the past 1000 miles and just finished doing a track day on it.

So far so good. Not sure what the oil pressure should be at 3000+ rpm, but idle it sits right at 30psi and I think stock it was at 20.

40 might be a bit thick for the bearing clearance.
Do you know what the bearing clearances are on the Gen II Coyote vs. the Boss 302 Roadrunner? I assume that since the two engines have the same crank, bearings and connecting rods that the clearances are the same.

There are several long threads on oils in this sub-forum you may want to check out.

I run Amsoil 5w30 and my car is a daily.

You could probably run 5w40 on track days, but I wouldn't drive around with it.

I was thinking of running Amsoil 0w40. Our cars here in Aus are factory spec'd with 5w30 due to our warmer climate. Surely lifting the weight to 40 is not enough to cause issues with daily use?

I (and others) have been running Amsoil 0-40.

stoli do you DD your car?

I think I've settled on the 0w40. The local Amsoil distributor encouraged me to go with 5w50 and said it would be fine for daily duties but everything I've read seems to indicate this is not applicable to the S550 Coyote V8...

Yeah I daily it. Since switching from 5w30 to 0w40 this year I've done two changes and about 5,000 miles.

stoli, did you notice any significant changes in oil temp reading (albeit from the vague factory gauge) while out on track between the two weights?

Couldn't tell you. I tend to watch coolant and head temps and oil pressure more than anything else.

I run Quaker State Ultimate 5w20. I've run 4 track days with this and the oil temp stays out of the yellow. Read 540Ratblog, try to read all of the information there and not just the oil ratings. You'll see why a thinner oil is better.

Don't try to outsmart the engineers that specify a particular oil weight and type.
