I have been to two dealerships and been told both times this is damage, not a defect, while I'm convinced it is a defect not damage (some scrapes but that isn't the point of interest).

I'm curious what you guys think.

Thanks.

Looks like someone took a lighter and melted it.

Yeah, and a scrape under it. Looks like someone hit it and caused a big scrape then tried melting it to fix it.

I can tell you I never hit anything and definitely never took a lighter to it. I acknowledge the scrape though, I got that just a couple days ago.

I voted Damage, but I think it could have been inflicted at the dealership before delivery, and they tried to touch it up. Once you took delivery of the car, then apparently YOU caused the damage.

It is a tough call either way.

Yeah, either way I'm going to get it replaced. Just seeing if warranty would cover it or not. The part is $165 so it isn't a big deal either way. I took a few manufacturing processes courses in college (engineering degree). I reached out to my old professor to get his thoughts on it.

Could be someone else did it to your car.

What has that got to do with anything?

Looks like damage to me.

Is this under the "chin", or is it on one of the rocker panels? Those are the only two places I can think of off the top of my head that have that type of grayish-black textured plastic...;)

The top of it looks like a defect, but the scraped bottom area looks like damage. Damn, that's a close one!

Just had some experience looking at different types of defects. also figured that a Ph.D. Professor who specialized in manufacturing processes could give his two cents.

The bottom part is scratched, there is no doubt about that. The upper portion is what I am interested in.

Knowing dealerships....regardless if your scratch didn't cause it they will for sure say it had something to do with it.
